To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Ray, OK, as promised.... Below is the best translation I can make. Maybe my kababayan here can help me correct it? Gat Puno? Leo? Jay? Jose? Manong Jorge? Ed? Anyone?..... In early times, this game/sport/contest (?) was known by the term "kali" by our ancestors, but because of the inevitable changes over time and events, this became known as "Panandata" in the Tagalog regions, "Pagkalikali" in the plains of Cagayan especially among the Ibanags, "Kalirongan" in Pangasinan, "Kaliradman" in Bisaya and "Pagaradman" in Ilonggo in 1860, and "Didya" in Ilokos, which again became "Kabaroan" according to Rev. Fr. Gregorio Aglipay who was also expert in arnis, in 1872. Mirafuente in Yambao 1957 (10) Mirafuente does not give any bibliographic references at the end of his chapter. However, he does give the definitions of the terms at the end, written in a dictionary format, which may mean that he had access to a dictionary or laid out the format that way. There is a literary reference here, a quote from "Florante at Laura" (Florante and Laura) an long poem written in the epic form (published as a book)from the 19th century by Francisco Balagtas. The quote includes two terms, buno (wrestling) and arnis. Other than that, and apart from a reference to the decree by Don Simon de Anda y Salazar prohibiting the carrying of weapons, no other references are given. Which is a pity, since I would also loved to have looked them up myself. The way this section in this chapter is written, there appears to be no other significance to the term kali than its being the term used to refer to the martial arts of the time. Just read that you'll be in Switzerland for workshop in May. It so happens that at this time Grandtuhon Gaje will be my guest in Reutlingen, that is Southern Germany and not far from Bern. Grandtuhon will stay with me about two weeks before we'll leave for the Ten Days Training Camp in Ibiza. Marc, I write this, because it's been a while since we met last time in Philippines. If you have some time before you'll leave Europe, you could come over to meet Grandtuhon and me. Benjamin has been here several times – he knows the way! :) Take care always! He apparently adopted the concept of "Palero" into his system. This is a component of Cuban Santaria, similar in some ways to Haitian Voodoo. His patches have that term on them along with Harimau, etc. There are no doubt some backyard Harimau guys in Cuba. I live in Ft. Lauderdale. I consider myself a silat guy who likes to mix alot of sportive training, (rolling, clinching, standup), with anti assault/LEO (edged awareness, stickgrappling, cuffing, and physical control), with the old methods. My training partner is a well versed combatives guy, named Mario Guevara. He is former Airborne, and a SWAT trained paramedic. Another of our group is Tony Torre of Modern Arnis, also of Bram Frank, Jimmy Tacosa, and Dwight Woods (Hi Dwight!). Our senior is Bruno Cruicchi. He is a world traveler and linguist. He has been in the arts over 40 years. He is our primary guiding force technically, and a profound practitioner/researcher of Garrote Larense, the Venezualan Stick, Machete, and Knife art. If you can imagine the Dogbrothers without gear, and add some Latin Machismo, well, ..you have Garrote. Bruno is also an instructor in many Korean arts, Filipino Eskrima, Chinese Internal Arts, and the silat arts of Raja Sterlak, and Serak, under Pak Vic DeThouars. Other South Florida backyard practitioners would be Dr. Harold Koning, who is a boxer, kickboxer, Dutch Kenpo practioner, and Guru in Mustika Kwitang under George DeGroot. Our little group tries to uncover any little know source of martial arts coming through South Florida. Besides Spanish, Bruno and Harold speak 6 or 7 more languages. So far we found a Maduran Silat/Sushi Chef who practiced a Cimande-type art. He is back in Madura now. We have also met a Cuban Special Forces guy, who served in Angola. He practices the Cuban Military Karate (Kanzan-Ryu??), which is fairly traditional with added neck breaks. There is also a Cuban Greco Roman/ Sambist down here. We are continuing to look for Hanafi based Cuban Harimau practitioners who have made it to South Florida. Bruno Cruicchi has his finger on the pulse of many of these arts. He met the Hanafi clan in Paris, and later he met Richard Crabbe DeBordes in London. His research into South American Arts is interesting. He will be trying to research a Colombian double stick art mentioned to him by one of his Garrote instructors. He remains open to the African, Canary Island, Spanish, Portuguese, and indiginous origins of stick, blade, and empty hand combat. If you have any questions for Bruno,....email me, and I will put you in touch. For anyone interested, there is private footage of the Garrote men going at it with sticks, and machetes. Someday, these will be available if we can twist Bruno's arm into making instructionals. I hope this helps, keep in touch. -Tom Furman, -powerfactor71839@aol.com-www.physicalstrategies.com. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Wed, 14 Apr 2004 09:39:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Rodriguez John Subject: Re: [Eskrima] About Silat To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Well, as I know in Cuba there is a group of Balintawak Escrima, another group who practices Arnis with an Irish instructor and our EBMAS group who trains mainly Latosa Escrima.. that's all I know altough could exist some others Escrimadores but mainly as individuals...
