But you have to realize, you do not see the masters commercializing their art. No matter how effective it is. Example, Tatang Ilustrisimo. He has always been hanging out in Luneta/ Rizal park(everysingle day!) Shoot! if I had only known this earlier I would be there. But he does not have a big sign that's commercializing him as the Best art there is. Now Karate/Judo/Taekwondo have signs and even til now some still have that belif that if you were a BLACK BELTER( You had these POWERS to beat anybody). In other words Mysticism because of ignorance. And These arts always have this statement that "Hey, what the hell is the use of your Arnis if you don't carry a stick all the time." Convincingly a good way to say that the emptyhand arts is more superior. Another example, GM Ernesto Presas does have his Big signs but is on the top of the building. NOt really where people could see it. He is not commercializing his art although he wants to spread it out. I learn about him by word of mouth. Lightning Scientific Arnis Late GM Ben Lema,My Teacher(Ernesto Presas) publicly said he was one of the best. Always at our school in the early 90s. GM Ernesto was learning his art. He never talked much about his art or demonstrated anything in our school. Heck! I asked him to teach me he just ignored me! He did not say that he was better because my instructor was learning from him. So go join my school I was looking for his school but you can't find it! Bot help me out here! The point is this, I would have loved to had started to learn my own Filipino art if the masters wanted to teach out to the public. But by nature the Filipino's master or not are secretive. You think we learned out Master's secrets. Hell not all of it. They will always die and bring some of that to the grave with them. It's like you Ray, You love your art. That is your preference. You chose to learn it. It is like going to Mcdonlad's and ordering a Big Mac. We all have a style that will cater to our taste. Now I believe that the new generation of students are trying to convince our teachers to allow us to crosstrain and teach side by side with the FMA's . So we can unite all the arts.
