Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (1) Jay, you're originally from Pangasinan. Do you still use this term Hi Bot: Sorry to have given you the wrong impression. I am a Manila boy, born and bred, who just happens to have lived in several places in RP. My father was born and grew up in Pangasinan until he went to college in Manila and stayed. I can only understand and speak basic conversational Pangalatok. But my cousin GM Nes Fernandez not only grew up in Pangasinan and can speak the dialect, he also learned his arnis (Toledo style) in Pangasinan. He would be the ideal person to ask about the kali issue. My father talked of witnessing actual fights involving arnisadors growing up in Pangasinan; he used the term "arnis." I remember him mentioning arnisadors from Calasiao, Pangasinan. By the way, your translations are right on. I'm not just familiar with the terms in question. I have mentioned this in previous posts, but I have never heard anybody, martial artist or civilian, use the term "kali" in conversation when I lived in RP, including Mindanao. Of course, at that time, I was not even aware of the arnis vs. kali issue, I did not ask specifically, and logically, my personal experience does not mean the term"kali" was not in use before my existence. (2) you could try "Pare, Eskrima?" or "Eskrima Pare?" or you might want to add "ko" as in "Pare ko, Eskrima" or "Eskrima Pare Ko?" -- they are the equivalent of "Arnis(Eskrima), anyone?" My recommendations : Pare, arnis tayo? Pare, laro tayo ng arnis? The first may be misinterpreted to be a challenge. The second one is an invitation to "play." You may drop the "Pare" in both cases, in which case, it will sound less friendly. Jay de Leon _________________________________________________________________ Mother’s Day is May 9.
