The coast guard uses this kind of rope and where i got it from, after a few years they toss out the old rope and replace it. i went and asked for it and they gave it to me. its held up with all of my working on it as well as my students working on it for nearly 6 years now and has at least 15 more years of cutting left on it..:) also its the closet thing to a head i have ever felt with full contact strikes, and it is small enough that targeting is done tightly instead of a wide heavy bag. I have not heard of Kali de Leon, but Grandmaster "Anding" de Leon, Grandmaster and Founder of the International Arnis de Leon Federation, teaches Arnis in Garland, Texas. His web site is www.arnisdeleon.com My Guro, T.C. Jones teaches a blend of Arnis de Leon, and Maharlika Kuntaw, in Cedar Hill, Texas. That's how some become rich and others lose money. If you really want something different, go buy a 40 bag of rice and do your moves with it. For one thing it's cheaper. For another it's good for your grip. Dave __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Have someone jab the pole at you while you practise knife techniques on it. Santiago "Tiago" Toledo's hometown was Lingayen, Pangasinan. In my last post, I mentioned the "de Leons" as well as GM Nes Fernandez were originally from Binmaley, Pangasinan. Binmaley is in between Lingayen and Dagupan, Pangasinan. By the way, you can purchase videos of GM Nes Fernandez. They are sold by Tiger Claw (www.tigerclaw.com). No, I do not get a commission; I like the Tiger Claw people I met when I lived in San Jose, CA and still see in booths during martial arts tournaments. They also have GM Ernesto Presas tapes. (2) I will be visiting the Ilocos regions sometime soon and will be looking for old men who still know the old Ilocano arnis styles. Would you know of anyone who might oblige me some information there? Sorry, no. Again, Kuya Nes might, as he has far reaching martial arts connections, both here in the US and RP. (3) Reggei Geralde wrote: I too would like to learn the Pangasinan/Ilokano style or system of Arnis/Eskrima...i hope that Jay will help us on this. Other than Kuya Nes, the only other GM I know that teaches a Pangasinan style is my friend Maestro Bernardo Salinas of British Columbia, Canada. He calls his style "Sinkatan Arnis Estrella," and he is originally from Manaoag, Pangasinan. It is hard for me to picture Manaoag, Pangasinan as a hotbed of arnis activity. Growing up, a trip to Pangasinan usually meant a pilgrimage to Manaoag as well, where their Virgin (as in Virgin Mary of the Catholic faith) is considered miraculous. After Mass, we would always go home with new rosaries, scapulars, etc. Anyway, Maestro Salinas has a website (www.sfma-intl.com); it has some Pangasinan arnis history. I believe that Maestro Salinas has participated in prestigious FMA Master events in the U.S., such as GM Hufana's event in Washington (where I planned on going, but did not make it--excuses, excuses. I am writing this for my friends who invited me). As a last aside, most of Pangasinan speak Pangasinense or Pangalatok (slang). Some parts, though, are also Ilocano speaking. My dad and Kuya Nes are fluent in both. Also, the Ilokos region is geographically close to Pangasinan. So I guess Leo and Reggei are right in their implication that there is some "kinship" even between the Pangasinan and Ilokano arnis styles. Good luck in your quest, gentlemen. I think the same benefits can be gained from oddly shaped weights made from your own supplies at home. Maybe the kettlebells are Space age engineered to perfectly stress the muscles etc. somehow I doubt it. There was an article in the UK version of Men's Health on an English blacksmith who makes his own Kettlebells. He had all sorts of shapes if I am not mistaken. I think the stress placed on using specifically shaped weights and excercises can be overstressed. Chucking shake blocks, or working on a framing crew will give ou a better core strength. In fact the newestr thing in fitness this stress on Core Strength is achieved by Labourers every day. Muay Thai champion Walter "Sleeper" Michalowski was a bricklayer just before he won. BTW check out the aforemnetioned magazine for a, in my opinion, really bad knife disarm in the self defence section. Phil ===== Phil Hurcum .:Head Instructor:. No material I have tested: pipe insulation, rope, duct taped newspaper, etc has been as easy to cut as real flesh and bone. Example, with a snap thrust using a Benchmade AFCK I went through a rib bone and I could tell no difference from a non bone area. I didn't even feel the bone. With a 5" cold steel SRK I have cleanly remove a deer head with ONE swing. People greatly underestimate the power of a sharp knife. I don't think non flesh cutting materials will improve your skills much as it doesn't take a lot of force to do alot of damage with a sharp blade. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
