They will insert a rock, padlock or similar item in one end, and knot it. I watched several of them, teenagers, playing around one evening and they would use the towel in a fashion similar to a pair if nunchuks. Now I rolled up on them, not to jam them up, but I was curious to see more of what they were doing, but they scattered, scared of the police I guess. But it intrigued me that these kids were practicing this crude form of defense, and when I asked around, I found out that they learn this from their homies who have been in prison. After seeing this, I am glad I carry a 31" ASP instead of a 16" or 21". Gives me more reach if I ever come across any of these "mis-guided" youths. There have been many "spirited debates" on the forum to the benifit of all, and from what I've seen, with very few hard feelings being shared by the members. Let us keep it that way. Ultimatly the moderator has the last word on what is acceptible and what isn't. I urge that the readers of this digest to remember that no one can see our faces or hear our voices to judge our attitude. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Please feel free to e-mail me directly to save >list space- "rattankid@hotmail.com" If you are in Seattle, Andy Wilson's school (http://www.mkgseattle.com) is a fine place to train. I have also heard good things about Bobbe Edmonds. Chris Clarke, fully qualified by the Inosanto Academy, is in Federal Way. In Portlandthere are a few. Northwest Fighting Arts does a lot of FMA. The Minden Training Hall does some as well. John Bruce Daniels is another Inosanto/JKD instructor who has an extensive background in the Filipino systems. There are more, but I've been out of the FMA loop for a while. --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: Fri, 21 May 2004 07:54:01 -0700 (PDT) From: Phil Elmore Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Handkerchiefs To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net There's a review in the Reviews section of The Martialist (www.themartialist.com) of James Keating's Combat Bandanna tape(s). Bob at Survival Sheath (www.survivalsheath.com) sells the "Bandanna Plus," a bandanna with a pocket sewn right into it for loading. I carried one on me on a recent trip out of the country. Loaded with the spare batteries I carry for my digital camera, it was quite a weapon, particularly wtih the ends tied off (above the load and on the opposite end as a handle stop). Funny. I asked Punong Guro Mat Marinas and he told me that a blackjack is called a “kaburata”; from Spanish, and that it has a bad connotation in the Philippines. Anyway… For YEARS I’ve carried one version or another of a “key-ring” blackjack / sap / kaburata. The current version is this: My keys; 3.5oz ( just weighed on a postal scale), attached to a 6” long x 3/8ths” wide nylon strap (think point and shoot camera strap). A 1”x 2” x ¼”  Sears mini-multi tool (mini folding pliers, etc…) on the other end, making the total weight 5.1 oz. I carry it with the keys in my right front pocket and the multi tool dangling out exactly in front of my right hand. When I take it out, the strap slips between my index and middle finger, so that the mini tool is inside my closed (or half open) fist, and I take it out the same way all the time to make it a hardwired habit. The COOL part is, IT’S ALWAYS THERE (well, maybe not in the shower). No one has ever questioned it, EVER. If you are paranoid about being stopped in an airport, make the handle another  key-ring with nothing attached. On the opposite view, to add to it’s potency, add a fishing sinker to it’s business end (the pyramid shaped ones are the nastiest). That’s it. Simple  Always there. Legal. If you use the handkerchief version, someone might question your intentions, because it was obviously made to hit someone. With my version there is nothing to question; after all, it’s only my keys. The only real downside is that it wears out the lower corners of my  pants pockets. The warning about hitting  yourself  is legit, it does bounce back. Stick with longer Larga Mano  strikes and sweeps. Aim at the bones on the back of the opponents hand. That’s a real “waker upper” A personal favorite is a horizontal to the left ear of the opponent. Even if you miss, you  still nail something worth your effort. Don’t do any fancy pants twirling or you may find yourself with one less eye. Good luck, and remember where you heard it first.   Guro Rob Mulligan / kwikstik.com                             ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Stop worrying about overloading your inbox - get MSN Hotmail Extra Storage! --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "rob mulligan" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 21 May 2004 12:55:11 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] kaburata techniques Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all again…   Somehow while over proofreading myself, I forgot to mention the teeny tiny little detail that most, if not all of the techniques I use with my key-ring blackjack are scaled down versions of what Pung Guro Marinas taught me for the Tabak –Toyok.
