Yeah, just want to point out one noble thing our Digest does for it's followers. This is what we Pinoys call the "Bayanihan Spirit" of lending out a Helping Hand. I've seen this a countless times, that whenever some FMA enthusiast posts/seeks/needs assistant in finding an FMA School/Instructor to some certain area due to relocation or whatever, there is always a brother or our reliable Ray Terry who unsolicitely gives the much needed info. Oftentimes, there is a match. Meaning that FMA presence is hugely availabe around and this is great for us all! My thanks to Maestra V. Gajo of San Diego - "hello and see you at Laban Laro in Vegas soon" and of course to long time pal Guro M. Casto (Hey!!) for specially referring me as one of Cincinnati FMA Instructors available to Mr. Howard Wilson who will be in Cincy soon. Welcome to Baseball City and Come visit us. I am wondering if any of these poster are still availabe, if only to look at them. The ones I am most interested in are Escrima 1 & 2 and Jeet Kune Do 2 salamat Sid --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 07 Jun 2004 19:44:05 -0400 From: Buz Grover To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Entrek Knives Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Anyone out there played with Entrek knives? I've been running into 'em online for a while, but shied away from 'em because I'm not a big fan of 440 C steel--there is a lot of junk out there made from 440 C. Be that as it may, I came upon an Entrek Destroyer for a good price and so picked it up and spent the weekend playing with it. So far I'm pretty pleased. The handle seems a little small, and I doubt the sheath would stand up to serious use for long, but I spent the weekend clearing brush and turning deadfall, mostly hickory, into kindling; the knife worked flawlessly. Had some old 5/8 inch kernmantle rope laying around; even after all my chopping and lopping the Destroyer easily cut the piece of free hanging rope. Have a big bald spot on my left forearm where I've been shaving hair after various tests; the knife is still honing hair just fine. I've been wanting to pick up a Strider PAB for a while, but haven't wanted to shell out 450 odd dollars for it. The Destroyer has a similar bolo shape, though it's about an inch shorter. The one I found was less than a quarter the price of a Strider. I'm now thinking about buying one of Entrek's short swords, Anyone had experience with Entrek over time? I'd hate to buy a couple and then find out they shatter and my pockets aren't deep enough to test one to destruction to see how long it holds up. Hello's out to Stockton, Bahala Na & San Jose, Inayan's Jason, Jenna, John and David. Hope you are all having a great summer! Acceptance of "exotic martial arts" You would think that the short sparring session that you gave them would have done the trick if all went well. The instructor may see your desire for external instruction as a threat to the assembled group unity that he/she worked hard to develop over time. If you asked permission prior to then I do not think it should be a problem. You may have to shop around for instructors that have a more open mind. Escrima is a very cool art. Very quick to the finish, succinct and to the point if you get the materials from the right group. Any instructor that does not treat you and your opinion as a person seeking answers to the arts as a path that each has to walk alone then they are misleading you. No one art has all of the answers(of course I think Escrima rocks ;-)) and if that person thinks that they do have all of the answers and do not accept your desire for a blended approach then you may have to shop around for another group. I know that Inayan approves of outside study, and in fact you probably could not move up in rank/stature if you did not seek the knowledge for additional skills and weapons training, as long as you had asked or discussed it beforehand. I never did reach any significant level at Inayan but I doubt it would be much of a big deal if you persued the extracurricular on your own time without asking as long as it didn't interferre with what of the main path that the class was on at the time and you mentally could handle the mixed training. In any case you might look for another group and not worry about what rank you are anywhere. Just find the right arts, right instructors, right student body. Enjoy yourself. Your time is precious and it belongs to you. Tommy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Friends. Fun. Try the all-new Yahoo! A flame thrower created from a "spare" butane tank with a hose piping the unlit gas into the cockpit doesn't need too much explaining. Would hate to be the guy who had to run the hose up to the cockpit though! You could also use a crane to pick the unit up with a hook or magnet from the steel plates that have been welded in place and drop him from about five plus stories or start slamming him into an empty building. Of course the latter wouldn't make property owners very happy so the first or second countermeasure would be the best solutions that I have to offer for now. Not exactly. Suro didn't consider outside study a plus when it came up moving up in rank. Only skill level and time in Inayan mattered. Suro seemed to go back and forth when it came to studying outside of Inayan. Some years he was okay with it, some years he wasn't. What did matter greatly was with whom you wanted to study. If it was someone Mike respected, that helped... a lot. It wasn't easy to earn his respect.
