Maybe, but more often than not once you press these people a little you find out that they were actually using padded sticks, were pulling their shots, were not actually trying to hit heads or hands, etc. I've heard too many stories over the years (which inevitably get exaggerated when there's no documentation to back them up) to not question them. That's why I like to see video. Perhaps the tone of my post was a bit harsh though. The night before my first Dog Brothers Gathering I watched Salty Dog (who's got some big, meaty hands) spar bare handed with some pretty thin sticks. His opponent landed a hand shot which split Salty's knuckle, resulting in him not being able to fight the following day. So let's just say I'm a little skeptical of tough talking people/groups on the web (you've probably seen some) claiming to regularly fight completely unarmored. No one is good enough to never get hit. It would seem to me that someone's going to be walking away with at least a broken hand unless the fighters immediately close every time or aren't seriously going at it. Then there's the risk of losing an eye to a thrust or getting killed if someone were to land a full power shot to the side of the head, etc. I don't doubt that people do it, it's just that I've never seen it. I'll have to check out the video that Rob cited. -milt --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Michael Koblic" To: "Eskrima digest" Date: Sat, 12 Jun 2004 11:21:23 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Bob Orlando's Tapes Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "I was considering in purchasing Bob Orlando's tape on silat and kuntao. Has one ever seen or own any of his video, and if so, are they informative as far as the overall scope of what he teachs? Is it well produced? Likes or dislikes? I have, I believe, all Bob Orlando's tapes, books and DVDs including the most recent release with the Kuntao-silat footwork. IMHO this material is nothing short of excellent. Bob Orlando has all the attributes of an excellent teacher: he can do the stuff, he understands what he is doing, he is a great communicator and above else, he has an organized mind. In that he is exceptional: there are two or three others I know including some of the contributors on this list who have the same qualities. In the past others tried to introduce me to silat yet I just could not grasp what it was all about. Bob Orlando breaks it down to what amounts an Idiot's Guide to Silat and lo and behold, the purpose of the various moves suddenly becomes clear. His attention to detail is impressive and he goes to great lengths to explain such details which amount to a difference between the success and failure of deceptively simple techniques. Bob Orlando's tapes etc. comprise my Book Two of MA Bible. I keep watching them over and over again and learn something new every time. I hope you find this helpful, Michael Koblic Campbell River, BC BTW I have never met Bob Orlando personally which I regret. I have no financial interest in his products or Paladin press. Furthermore, I have no credentials to make the above statement more impressive than what it is - a one man's opinion. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: GatPuno@aol.com Date: Sat, 12 Jun 2004 18:53:00 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Thought is well taken Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In a message dated 6/12/04 12:08:01 PM Eastern Daylight Time, eskrima-request@martialartsresource.net writes: Marc, than k you for the answer. If you ever watch the Dog Brother tape of the "Manong", you can see that GM Cavales is ready to fight everyone, in his showing he meant what he is saying on the tape. He reminds me of the other GM i know back home. Remy Presas, tell you the same, he is the best, and ready to prove that too. So I can see that all of the GM I know have the same attitude towards there arts. Anyway, I thank you for your honest opinion. You have the right to vaoice your points, and points is good and taken.
