I'm not going to call myself a heavy hitter, but based on past experience, it looks like I'm doing pretty well at identifying them (or at least on the right track). --jeff --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 29 Jun 2004 00:53:46 +0400 From: eric.taimanglo@us.army.mil To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] We are just like you Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net You wrote, " From this day forward, I shall drink no Starbucks and darken no door of the Gap. I think I'll join the military. Perhaps I can kill some people, get captured, tortured, and live to return to a bunch of ungrateful bobos whom I protected from the evil terrorists and what remains of the axis of evil." Why do I get the feeling that your view of soldiers is that of the bloodthirsty savage? Yes, we train to kill. In the beginning, the will to kill another human being is cultivated in order to break the barrier separating civilian from soldier; in any conflict where your life and the lives of your buddies hang on split second decisions, killing without hanging back a second to "think it over, talk it out" is the only way out, besides getting a "million dollar wound". We kill, because if we don't, we don't go home. On those of us getting captured and tortured: I wish you would not speak of our buddies so callously. While you sit at home and read the news about "another b eheading" or "another soldier kidnapped", you probably put the paper away, another head-feeding session out of the way. For us, it is a "news flash" of the greatest urgency, and inspires much activity. I have been instructing my squad and other members of my platoon in the use of improvised, impact and bladed weapons (pretty much everyone now carries a karambit like blade, sold to us by Iraqi vendors), because this war is very up close and personal for "us" here on ground. We read that same stuff in the same paper and it hits home like you would not believe; do you think you could possibly relate to the story of a guy who made it through a whole year here without a scratch, getting killed by a mortar HOURS before he was to board the freedom bird back to his wife and kids? A little respect for them, please. As far as ungrateful bobos are concerned, well, I think the last returning soldier who got spat on and called "baby killer" set foot back in the states somewhere around 196 5-75. You're right, I do not, nor would I ever seek a pedestal to stand on because of my station in life as a soldier. I am no hero. I serve in the company of heroes. If it weren't for my buddies, I doubt I could have lasted this long. Yes, it is a mere job. A job that makes me one with every single soldier or warrior who ever lived, fought, and died. If anything makes me proud to be a soldier, that would be it. So you are a lifeguard. I say great, good job pulling those kids out of the water. I do have a question though... why do you volunteer as a lifeguard? It seems to me you have no sense of when you have done a good job, or when you should feel good about what it is that you do. I have always been wondering whether I should have filled out that application for Special Forces. Eric, it is people just like you that clear all doubt from my mind. Thank you. One more thing... I would like to clarify this. "Us soldiers" are just like each and every one of you. We are the same kids you yelled at for being loud, the same teens you busted in the backyard with a beer and smoke, and the same young men and women you saw walk into and out of Starbucks and the GAP. We just found ourselves in a extraordinary situation, and are learning to adapt and lean on each other to get through it. Shoot, Eric, I used to be a Bobo. I agree with the rest of your post, but this sounds like something out of the Rambo movies.
