They return recently and they have a lot of esperience to tell. How people of Iraq appreciated them and thanking them. Off course war has a lot of negative results specially when your comrads start falling one by one to the hand of the enemy, you start developing mixed anger and fears. But hey this soldier are happy to be back and happy that they went there to serve the people of iraq to liberate them from devil dictator. My student have a lot of thank from their training in FMA its came handy from closed comprontation. One of the two got a wounded in battles, but after three days he went back to fight. On their battalion, he met other that practiced FMA and shared knowledge. It nice to know that FMA is helping our soldier to fight for our safety from the evil terrorist. Like others practitioners and Rey Terry said its look like those people is not skilled fighter, its not good Eskrimador its only one way to find out, do not watch them fight them. May be you are skilled enough to become a Champion after three or four fights. The Tournament is open to all styles, and we really not level fighter their skill level, you could be fight the Granmaster or beginner, you just dont know who you will be fighting with, so. Arnis Eskrima is not measured how pretty you delivered your strikes, it how effective your strikes, defense and counters. So everyone is carefully trying outwitt each other winner take all. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Awwww, come on guys. Must this list degenerate into another collection of generalist opinions on military and gender politics ? There are tons of political news groups for exactly this sort of discussion. Go there I've been on this list for about five years and have learned immensely from this huge collection of FMA experts. Let's not turn them off from partipation by flooding this group with this crappola. Ray, please consider excluding these generalized discussions that aren't specific to FMA or training. Or start another list for political discussions about whatever topic with martial arts buddies. I've found certain mantra's are helpful in certain situations, like:" It doesn't matter if I like it, I just have to get it done!" really helps when I do not want to do my push ups! At the heart of each "way" there exists a shrine constructed by those who have journeyed before. Take no path for granted - respect each for the wisdom it contains. My father is a decorated veteran, and told me many stories of his service in the Korean War. I prize our freedom as much as the next person, a freedom that allows us to disagree with our nation's leaders when we think they are wrong, or are not representative of their constituents. That very freedom permits me to speak my mind without getting the "America, love it or leave it" rhetoric. That same freedom also allows for our partisan system, giving us free voting rights, which I exercise every single time we elect public officials. I am not opposed to America defending the banner of freedom wherever it may be necessary; I have very strong beliefs on the reasons why we entered into this war, and will continue to express myself as I see fit. I personally think that our military presence would be much more appreciated and needed in other areas of the world. So, I stated my opinion, you stated yours. However, I am taken aback a bit by your offense to the way I may or may not be thinking; that sounds a bit like the very ideals you feel we trying to overcome in Iraq, and other places like Germany in the past. It is a bit scary when we can be called to task in this country for the way me might be thinking. Remember the word "Freedom" that you toss around so freely? Is this freedom as you perceive it, freedom for only a select few, freedom for only those that think the way you do? You know, this brings to mind the current controversy about the pledge of allegiance, about deleting the words "under God" from the pledge. How about an addition to the pledge to better reflect the way things really are...changing the final line to "Freedom and justice for all, except for certain minority groups, races, religions, ethnic groups, and those with convoluted thinking"? If we are being honest here, isn't that the way we continue to believe, despite our many battles both here and abroad to defend the ideal of "freedom" we are so willing to deny each other? Freedom means just that, FREEDOM to express oneself without fear of reprisal, freedom to live, work, and think as we choose. Finally, in the future, you may want to exercise a little restraint when calling others fools. I can only remind you of the anonymity of the Internet, and how easy it is to cast insults to others without having to face the person you are so upset with. NAMBLA: Back in the 1980s and early 90s I was a candidate for US Congress for the Libertarian Party a few times and in that context went to the Party's convention one time and saw a "plank" supporting NAMBLA in the state party's platform. I hit the roof, as did many other people. I forget what happened but was told I should feel free to disregard and disavow it-- which I did. > Just restricting myself to the movie portrayal, I like the way they did that ... almost. What I liked is that Achilles fighting style was very evasive (maybe the most evasive movie style outside KF flicks), so the shot to the A tendon hampered his mobility and therefore he was more vulnerable (remember in the movie he dies from the arrows in the chest, but he rips them out, kind of the moveimaker implying "here's where they got the legend"). What I didn't like was the movie's need to enhance Paris' stature. I think it should have been a lucky shot and not the result of Paris practicing archery (the scene is actually not in the Illiad, if my memory serves me correctly, but in the myth). > > Andy I too enjoyed Achilles fighting style (as well as the shots of the technology of the phalanx) and the movie's explanation of the myth and agree with your dislike of the changes to Paris's story. He even lived in the USSR for a time. That is where he learned the evils of the system and it gave him a basis for his writings. As for unrestricted violence by the military, I don't believe any sane person advocates that. I read the quote just as it is written, civilians need not worry about their safety because there are men about to protect them. If memory serves, the Illiad covers the tenth year of the war, from Achilles argument with Agamemmnon over the slave girl to Priam's burying the body of Hector. The post-Illiad end comes from a flashback storytelling in the Odyssey, but I'm not sure if that's where Achilles death is told (and part of it is borrowed for the Aeneid, as you pointed out some posts ago). Wherever it's from, you're right: Paris shoots an arrow into Achilles ankle (his one vulnerable point because his mother had to hold him somewhere when she dipped him into the river to give him invulnerability etc.). I tend to think it was supposed to be a lucky shot, but I can't recall where I'm getting that from. It's probably one "guided by Aprphodite". --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "Leo Daher" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Personal motto's and motivators Date: Thu, 01 Jul 2004 15:43:35 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The one I use as my sig line: "Praise be that which toughens" - Nietzsche  ----Original Message Follows---- From: "Nigel" Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net To: "Eskrima Digest" Subject: [Eskrima] Personal motto's and motivators Date: Thu, 1 Jul 2004 21:37:58 +1000 Just curious what personal motto's, quotes or other motivators that people use?
