An interesting >note is that he makes the distinction between agricultural bolos and >jungle fighting bolos. I'd have to dispute the statement about "Much of Modern Arnis is based on the blade work of his grandfather and uncle." Interestingly, he doesn't cite them as any particular influence in either his first book "Modern Arnis, Philippine Martial Art "Stick Fighting" (I hunted around for my Tagalog copy but I couldn't find it) or his second " The Practical Art of Escrima". He does mention Moncal, Bacon and Marranga all of Balintawak note. He also uses balintawaks 12 basic strikes and counters with the stance variations I understand this will annoy a lot of people but the truth is much of Modern Arnis was about trying to mainstream Escrima and develop the sportive aspects to make it more socially acceptable. Take a look at his early books (the karate stances and tournament rules), this was the real history of "Modern Arnis". This is not to say he wasn't a fighter or he didn't know his stuff. He was quite well known around Cebu. Seemed the mark of whether he really liked you was whether he taught you Balintawak or not. Are you still around Rocky?? On the statement about agricultural or jungle fighting bolos.....well?? Looking through my books I don't see any particular difference between the ones described in the books and the ones I have at home. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Thompsonf@aol.com Date: Sat, 3 Jul 2004 10:50:13 EDT Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Crappola To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net SPC Taimanglo is over in Iraq defending our country. Therefore, in my opinion, he has the right to say whatever the hell he wants on this forum, whether it be about training or politics. A discussion of how your experiences in Iraq have influenced your development as a fighter is perfectly appropriate here, but a discussion of whether the war itself is right or wrong has little to do with martial arts and is probably more appropriate for a full-out political discussion forum. I couldn't agree more. I'd like to point out that as a soldier, I am encouraged not to have political, religious, or ethnic points of view. I am encouraged to follow orders. The only time I really pay attention to such things is when they have an immediate bearing on my mission, like Sun Tzu said, " Know your enemy." Indeed, like the Delta operator said in Blackhawk Down, "When the first round goes past your head, politics, all that bullshit goes right out the window." On the other hand, why is the thread on the movie "Troy" going strong without complaints? Anyway, I took advantage of the Army's bungling supply system and wound up with a classic US Army "Bushwhacker" Machete; it's totally subdued in a nonreflective black finish. As soon as I took ahold of it, I began carenzaing the hell out of it, and got "the look" from my Plat-Daddy, which prompted my freezing in mid-roof and running away with it as fast as I could. So far, he hasn't said anything about it, but it's stayin g underneath my cot for now. Heh heh.... --__--__-- Message: 10 From: "WoodyTX" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Personal motto's and motivators Date: Sat, 3 Jul 2004 14:15:44 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In Army Infantry, we used to chant, "The more you sweat, the less you bleed." when doing certain exercises. A friend of mine who did competitive pistol shooting had a poster above his couch that said: "While you're sitting there watching TV, someone else is training hard. And when you meet him, he's gonna kick your ass." And I've always found foul language to be a motivator, whether internal or external. See the Richard Marcinko "Rogue Warrior" books (cheap military fiction) for excellent examples.
