Due to the length of the weapon, there will quite a distance to cover if you want to attack your opponent after moving out of range. So eventually you will be caught in the path of the weapon. Counters against angle 1 & 2 (diagonal slashes to both sides of the head) are quite straight forward as you can jammed the hand or shaft to stop the weapon. However, for attacks toward torso, I have problems to position my hand with enough support to stop the heavy weapon. By the way, as in the case of Kenjutsu, a Gwan Dao expert do not swing the weapon but rather using his lead hand to guide the weapon, which can recovers or changes direction quite fast. >Close, get inside the sword's range, or evade, get outside of its range. >Ray Terry > rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "rockypasiwk" To: Date: Mon, 12 Jul 2004 09:26:16 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Balintawak Again Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Actually when GM Bacon studied the Saavedra System it was STICK and dagger not sword! Anciongs dagger was taken away from him because he hurt people in training. There was no grabing of the stick because you had a dagger in the other hand and couldn't grab, as Anciong developed his skills he realized the value of not comitting to grabing someonse stick even if you had a free hand, because you could come up against a bladded fighter. GM Presas recognized how incredibaly hard it is to grab and control a good Balintawak persons stick, which is why he concentrated on it so much, if you can grab a mans stick who trains not to be grabbed you are one up on him. However if you don't know what to do after you grab that stick the Balintawak man will make you pay!!!! So the Presas's method and Balintawak worked great together, throw in the Moncol method of Balintawak which also used grabbing techniques and relied heavy on baiting techniques , top it off with Tajarkarta (SP) all of which are also very close quarters arts and bada bing you gat a pretty effective art. Water it down throw in a microwave for 10 minutes you get Modern Arnis......Just kidding!!! If your videos shows some korean attendees during that time, then we can only say and conclude that their stickfighting system came from eskrima. Also, I just found out that they also have knife fighting systems which they fairly admit that comes from Filipino -- didn't say if they got it from Sayoc Kali (another thing I have to dig in to). Your input is much appreciated. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net my favorite training quote (paraphrased from the LItany Against Fear from DUNE) I will not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. I will face my fear. I will allow it to pass over and through me. When the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain. Also while I'm delurking... Brian recommends those who have not tried racking a kettlebell (or dumbell if that's all you got) in the Clean Position with your live hand while you do some of your daily cuts. It's a real monster. I'm using a baby 1 pood (16kg) KB and it's kicking my butt BAD, I have recently started doing my daily cuts like this and it works really well. 2000 cuts. 3 supersets 1 superset= 5 sets of 10 doce teros (12strikes, 5 on L, 5 on R, back and forth) I'm doing 1 of those 5 with the KB racked. It's evil. Do one superset, then do Clean &Jerk with 2 KBs then another super, then C&J, then the last super and more C&J. I then finish out the 2000 with 4 easy sets of 50strike siniwali for cooldown. Good Stuff! I'd be really interested in hearing how the other folks on the list arrange their daily solo high-rep stick drill. Away from partner practice one has to hit the solo work real hard. cheers, Brian -------------------- This message was sent from a PCS Phone from Sprint. Get a free PCS Mail account! I find that most of these small knives do not have much of a grip. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dear David Eke, Having served in the Australian Army,in signals, I can assure you that a machete is what is issued as part of a general issue. A machete was also issued to all troops who served in the S.E. asian arena during WW2 if they needed them. Instead, you are using your stick to redirect the weapon of the opponent away from you and counter strike to the delivery system. I had successfully demonstrated this several times against long weapons like the Gwan Dao even against a spear. You are not trying to stop the force of the heavier weapon but actually helping your opponent move his weapon but not towards you. You 'll find that you do not need a lot of force to redirect. It would be easier for me to demonstrate than to describe but if you come to our summer camp August 28 and 29th in Burbank Campgroung, Blackfalds, Alberta I will be more than pleased to show you.
