Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dear Eskrima Fans: I previously asked for any schools in San Antonio area. Prefer schools that are reality based training and away from the traditional style, although I have nothing against this type of training and encourage it. I received only a few responses. Thanks, but still interested in the down and dirty stuff. For example, Professor James (NYC), Marco Lala (NYC), Eskrima/Knife Fighting, Tony Blauer situational training, defending against the edged weapon...boxing tactics, body armour training, response to attacks in the street. If you know of schools either in San Antonio or Austin, Texas that combine the above philosophies great. Will also consider a reputable Hapkido instructor. Not interested in TKD or forms. Interested in street survival tactics, using modern weapons like baton, knife, and cane. Not interested in swords or archery--but encourage others if that is their predilection. Want training in getting in and getting out of a fight...boxing, Esrima, ground fighting (defending against the grappler), and conditioning. A few suggestions here or privately is appreciated. To those who previously responded thanks. Ken "The New Texan" McDee " --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! Similar techniques like the Pauyon Tumbada or Cadena Real will also work but the Fraile is more effective for me. Participants have the opportunity to compete in an array of events from stickfighting (single/double), knife dueling, long sword, sword & dagger to grappling. This September we decided to give practitioners a chance to safely move up and play under more stringent conditions. We will still have a WEKAF category but hope to transition these new events as the norm. There will be 2 new divisions of stickfighting. Both events will be single-stick category and restricted to limited armor. Fighters will use the WEKAF helmets, gloves and groin protection (elbow/knee pads optional). Participants can choose between padded or regulation "live" stick categories. Rules and scoring are still under review. However, here are some thoughts. -legs are open season -thrusts to torso -maximum no. of exchanges inside (head referees will be instructed to break-up excessive, careless exchanges and encourage fighters to move in & out) -NO empty-hand techniques are allowed We hope to have further clarification on the rules & scoring by end of July. I will post a follow-up once this detail is available. Yours in the Arts, John G. Try again. Obviously you cant block the blade of a sword or knife with your hand, but you can certainly jam the arm that is holding the weapon or pass the weapon by moving to the outside of your opponents arm.You really have no choice if its the wrong time for the in-a-perfect-world-technique that would be your first choice. Surely youve seen meets and follows......." If you read my original message below you could see I was thinking from a largo point of view, where jamming the weapon arm or passing the weapon with one's free hand would be hard to do. But considering your advice it and assuming one would be in corto range, it would be dangerous to jam the arm without having control of the weapon. The same thing with passing and moving to the outside, it would be safer to parry with your weapon rather than with your empty hand. Regarding meets and follows is that the same as jam and passing? Finally Steve, if you really think that my question regarding blocking a blade with an empty hand was a thinly veiled attack on The Cold Steel Challenge then I can clearly see we will never have a meeting of the minds.
