Chad has an impressive list of movies under his belt as well as excellent martial arts credentials. Michael A. Jeff practices Kenpo and also trained under John Sepulveda (also trained with Eskrima). I have a friend told me that practicing Eskrima supplements their kenpo abilities because 80% the art uses hands, arms, elbows. etc. but if you give them sticks and have them show "their" kenpo-sticks you will notice the similarities (huge!) to Eskrima. Just my thoughts. Don't think he did the stunts though. Several of the IAMA students are successfully active in the stunt world, Jeff Imada for example. Right location I suppose! iPat -----Original Message----- Also, I have recently borrowed the second two 'Matrix' DVDs off a friend. Someone told me that a stunt double for Keanu Reeves in some scenes was Inosanto-trained. Anyone with any info? I've seen that statistic quoted in a wide variety of places by a similarly wide variety of MA practitioners. Speaking from the viewpoint of police tactics, most of my resistant arrest subjects have ended up on the ground due to the nature of the limited amount of force used by me and the other officers. It's a whole lot harder to control someone using minimal force than it is to render them incapable of resistance by whatever means available. In my personal life, I think I would resist going to the ground as it tends to narrow your options and personal combat is fraught with uncertanties. I have noticed that the younger LEOs sem to be fond of getting on the ground with the suspect and rolling around with him during the handcuffing process. In a recent incident, there was another old timer, me, and a rookie trying to subdue a drunk outside a hospital emergency room and the rookie was trying to take the bad guy to the ground. Unfortunately, the other old guy and I were holding the suspect up because we didn't want to go to the ground. The rookie kept yelling "to the ground!" and yanking on the arrestee's neck. The other old fart and I were yelling "NO, Joe! Not to the ground!". Almost tore the guy's head off. But I'll leave you with the words of my FTO, George Petruny, in 1978 " Son, if you're on the ground - and you're not handcuffing - You're losin'" Steve --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Bakbakan@aol.com Date: Tue, 20 Jul 2004 10:15:16 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: September Stickfighting Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello Gints, By now you’ve probably read my follow-up post with date & location. You are absolutely correct with respect to “clean shots”. However, that only solves part of the scoring issue. I have a saying, “it’s not the conditions in which you play, it’s how you engage” This means whether you are playing unarmored largo, WEKAF or Dog Brothers rules, it is your responsibility to fight realistically utilizing evasiveness, feints, intent, power etc…To fight with combat in mind! The purpose of having an actively involved head referee who shares this philosophy is to simply encourage and/or remind fighters of this mindset & strategy. I used to compete in tournament/WEKAF. Although there are some benefits to full armor stick-fighting (i.e. endurance), a great majority of participants experienced alike are careless and approach such events with points in mind. BTW …this comment is not limited to tournament players. I have seen many limited armor matches fought poorly. I am not sure if we will allow grabbing of the weapon. If so the disarm will have to be effortless. Snaking is allowed but again must be executed without wrenching your opponents arm. Making this transition will be a constant learning experience for the organizers. I have no longer have interest in tournament sparring and look forward to this change. In Matrix 1, the credits specifically list Chad as one of the two stunt doubles for KR and on Matrix 2 he is listed as the Fight Choreographer (or something like that). Studied with the Presas brothers. We even have a picture with Ernesto and Ed P. together. Interesting that they did not give credit to the FMA at least even if they do not mention who they learn it from. _________________________________________________________________ Planning a family vacation?
