Grappling is not a good option in streetfights, but to train in grappling makes one know how to get out of a clinch or know what to do if taken down. It also prevents broken bones and joint sprains on the ankle and foot. I learned this the hard way when I first trained in FMA 3 years ago and was taken down by my first instructor. Admittedly a reckless act on his part, he took me down even as he knew very well that I had no grappling practice. So I broke a fibular bone and sprained my ankle and was out of commission for 2 months. 2. FMA keeps getting "insert" roles in Hollywood, but when will there be a "definitive" FMA movie where it would be more than just a diversion of the hero or his sidekick twirling two sticks artfully? When will we see an actual movie that delves in FMA and doesn't disguise it as "knife fighting" or "hand-to-hand combat"? When Steven Seagal made his movies, he never mentioned Aikido but the costumes, the ritual, the techniques, and the pictures of O Sensei Morihei Uyeshiba in his first movie "Hard to Kill" were unmistakeable. Benicio del Toro's "The Hunted" came close, but still the FMA came across as something else, as "knife fighting" in generis. We may all wince a great deal at the idea, but I still believe in all honesty that the best way to make a definitive FMA movie would be to make a more realistic and less sappy version of Pat Morita's "Karate Kid". Let's give it the working title of "Kali Kid", where the American scrawny teen meets an old master in Hawaii or Stockton who teaches him old tricks. :) Only this time, there are no unrealistic crane stances, miraculous ice block breaks by untrained hands, and point tournaments. And please, no "Cobra Kai". ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? You can find a short biography on him at www.worldblackbelt.com where is a founding member. By the way, he is actually in the Karate Kid movies, as the tournament referee. He is the real deal in martial arts, and as well known in martial arts cinematic circles as you can get. Well, most silat is Muslim to some degree, so that's no big stretch. Lots of philosophy and lots of stuff for sale, including on-line training that looks like it can get you all the way up to Instructor level, if I was reading the stuff right. So, given that (especially the last bit - distance learning of martial arts, right through your web browser?!?), I'd be a little skeptical of this. They may well be good fighters, and might be able to teach some effective stuff, but they seem to be based in Taiwan, so I'd think one would need to go there to really get much benefit. Come to think of it, Taiwan isn't exactly a hotbed of silat. Don't think it has exactly what you'd call a huge Muslim population, either. Now, back to FMA talk! (lurking, technically, for me...) I'm going to retract my statement that the movies were "cheesy" I did enjoy them very much and I believe they are still enjoyable to kids and parents alike now, the fight scenes were good, and hell my two cousins are in the 2nd movie running up to Ralph Macchio in the beginning asking for his autograph. My Uncle is amazing and if I even had half of his discipline, focus and dedication, I might actually have stuck with the martial arts instead of starting over again now, but at least I have discovered the FMA and I find this art more fascinating than most if not all the other stuff out there. _________________________________________________________________ Is your PC infected?
