So, it has to be 5 questions to be simple and straight to the point or else the moderator would kick me out of the blue. Let's just say the place is not the factor but the situation that will take place. It could be anywhere... home, office, parking lot, bars, restaurants, movies, etc... etc... State laws vary from state to state so let's consider those points too. Thanks. With respect, Bobby From: "Aaron Alejandro" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Poll Date: Fri, 23 Jul 2004 11:34:05 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Bob, Per your question, and multiple choice answers: I believe you may have a 6th, 7th, 8th and many other options. However, I believe the answer really resides in Option #1 and #2. (Because it is an election year, I choose to find an answer in the middle.) If the situation cannot be verbally defused, I would believe Option #1 is perfectly acceptable, warranted and necessary. If it were a 9-11 sucker punch, push, shove, etc., Option #2 provides an appropriate response. Something else to consider, which was not part of your original question, is where does this situation occur. Depending on the policies of a workplace, organization or laws of a state, there could be serious consequences for any response -- appropriate or not. Just a thought. Good brain candy question though. Interesting the way you phrased # 4 & # 5 .... No striking - does this mean I can do my best to restrain him? Because the wording of the question can also be taken to mean I won't strike first...but I can avoid, evade, catch, takedown, lock, etc. the attacker. If that is what you mean, #4 is certainly useful to teach a lesson - you didn't hurt the other guy, he hurt himself - and # 5 is useful for certain situations and people - a drunk, your cousin or sibling, people you don't want to hurt (well too much anyway ;-)). Assuming you spent time training how to do that If that is the case, I would favor #4 & #5 first - and then go to striking if necessary. Of course, the real world isn't always this neat... egos get poked, tempers flare, and all the rest follows. He said that he would really miss training when he went back as there would no teachers available. I study FMA with a JKD approach, anyone know of any teachers of either of these two ever in Bangladesh? BTW I suggested that there would probably be Indian-based martial arts there and he was aware of this. A longshot I know. I happen to love the movie because it is the definitive martial arts movie of my Gen X generation here in Manila. For years after 1984 (when Karate Kid 1 was shown in manila), all the kids would do the crane stance move! Enrollment in karate classes were at their peak. All the prestigious and more exclusive Catholic schools for the upper and middle classes had Karate clubs serviced by a sport Karate franchise. Now, if FMA had something liek that, FMA won't be almost extinct (in Tagalog we say "naghihingalo na") in its homeland. The movie IMO had the same ingredients that made Spiderman 1 and 2 a hit--a great plot where good guy struggles with his weaknesses, bad guys who had consciences too, and wins in the end. Along the way he gets a beautiful girl, and since this is a martial arts movie he gets good life lessons in patience and fighting from a venerable teacher. For its faults in exaggerated details and pollyannish approach to fighting only when really really REALLY provoked, it's still THE martial arts movie of my generation. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
