It is not my intention to make such a "general poll" for the list or for the FMA forum. My sincere apologies to all members of this forum if these questions are too obscure and awkward. My point was to get some ideas from different experts and master who had or have not encountered real fight or similar situations in life. Rest assured that these answers will be taught theoretically and someday these can be applied realistically. And I will learn from it for sure. And thanks for pointing that out for me. Respectfully, Bobby Indas ------------------------------------------------------------------------ --- Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 02:06:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Felipe Jocano Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Poll To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Bob; Is this a general poll for all on the list? we all come from different countries and legal systems, so that should be a factor in the answers you give. Interesting the way you phrased # 4 & # 5 .... No striking - does this mean I can do my best to restrain him? Because the wording of the question can also be taken to mean I won't strike first...but I can avoid, evade, catch, takedown, lock, etc. the attacker. If that is what you mean, #4 is certainly useful to teach a lesson - you didn't hurt the other guy, he hurt himself - and # 5 is useful for certain situations and people - a drunk, your cousin or sibling, people you don't want to hurt (well too much anyway ;-)). Assuming you spent time training how to do that If that is the case, I would favor #4 & #5 first - and then go to striking if necessary. Of course, the real world isn't always this neat... egos get poked, tempers flare, and all the rest follows. I was one a great fan of that movie. I even have 2 parts of it. My cousins were teasing on me when I was young "do that thing" that 'karate kid' does! Way back home (Philippines) either you get embarrassed or kicked by other kids. The crane stance was very popular for most kids -- and switching them (snap kick) made it look cool to others. I agree that was a breaking point to all Martial Arts schools back home. Peace! Bobby Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2004 05:04:32 -0700 (PDT) From: Leo Salinel To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Karate Kid: The Movie Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net The movie is basically a teen "feel good" movie where nerdy good guy always wins over the bad guy. I happen to love the movie because it is the definitive martial arts movie of my Gen X generation here in Manila. For years after 1984 (when Karate Kid 1 was shown in manila), all the kids would do the crane stance move! Enrollment in karate classes were at their peak. All the prestigious and more exclusive Catholic schools for the upper and middle classes had Karate clubs serviced by a sport Karate franchise. Now, if FMA had something liek that, FMA won't be almost extinct (in Tagalog we say "naghihingalo na") in its homeland. The movie IMO had the same ingredients that made Spiderman 1 and 2 a hit--a great plot where good guy struggles with his weaknesses, bad guys who had consciences too, and wins in the end. Along the way he gets a beautiful girl, and since this is a martial arts movie he gets good life lessons in patience and fighting from a venerable teacher. For its faults in exaggerated details and pollyannish approach to fighting only when really really REALLY provoked, it's still THE martial arts movie of my generation. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 03:52:15 -0700 (PDT) From: Karol Krauser Subject: Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Moneymaking idea.... Kali-specific, I do things like lunges, slow sinawalli with heavy sticks or iron pipes of some kind (doing it slowly, you wouldn't' believe the kind of muscle tone you get), and Carrenza for about 15-20 minutes for cardio. Nothing I do is really static, like my good friend Karol the Unggoy says, I prefer functional strength over static strength. One thing I would recommend is to go SLOWLY when you are training forearm strength using such drills as Abaniko & Redondo, as well as figure-8's, etc. These strikes usually put enormous stress on the tendons, and can cause tendonitis if you overdo it at the early training stages before you are acclimated to the type of exercise. I've seen it happen over & over in my school. Baboy --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Bobbe Edmonds" To: Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 05:00:20 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: It's all about Ray! Here's to another ten years of good friends, interesting discussion, training, & petty bickering over lineage & use of Filipino terms! *Hoists a beer* Baboy --__--__-- Message: 6 From: Kes41355@aol.com Date: Thu, 29 Jul 2004 10:30:40 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: FMA conditioning Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi John, I'm a Serrada and Largo Mano guy, and I've found that the art itself is an incredible conditioner. The drills we do are excellent for improving cardio strength, eye-hand coordination, body mechanics, etc. I used to pose the question of conditioning to my teachers, and to Mike Inay specifically, and their recommendation was to practice your art, it will condition you as you train. The old Manongs were geniuses when it came to fighting, and ways to prepare you to fight. Many of the drills we do develop specific attributes, such as those I listed above. For example, I have never participated in any activity that better developed my endurance than practicing the lock and block drills of Serrada. About the only outside activity that I tossed in and found to be extremely beneficial was jumping rope...helps keep you light on your feet, since things in the FMA's tend to happen pretty quickly. Good luck with your training, Kim Satterfield In a message dated 7/29/04 5:35:51 AM US Eastern Standard Time, eskrima-request@martialartsresource.net writes: > What type of conditioning is recommended for some one who is new to the art > > of Kali.
