Also you have neglected to tell us whether the person being tested will take a stationary stance or be allowed to take one or more steps as this additional momentum will have an effect on the initial impact force. On top of this how do you propose to have each subject do the same stike at exactly the same angle or trajectory. Have you also considered body rotation and flexibility on top of motion. As a subjects flexibilty may allow them to have a slightly longer strike. Also body rotation of a stationary strike allows the pelvis to rotate and creates a whipping action delivering noticeable force difference as compared to no body rotation. Therefore the striking motion is not just muscle mass, tendons and sinews from the shoulders, chest and arms. Flexibilty also helps with transmission of power and follow through. Rate of descent of the strike is influenced by the elbow position and can be calculated using the distance from the bag and cot theta. In other words the strike should be a whole body motion if one wants to deliver maximum power - perhaps one day I will be able to acheive this holy grail. Everything works in theory, which is why theory is so good. Practical Application well ....I am still working on that. Under 20 is considered too low and 25-30 is considered overweight, 30-35 serious overweight and over 35 patgological overweight. Of course, one has to remember that the BMI can vary depending on your body structure, a person doing a lot of exercise has more muscular mass and therefore the BMI can be higher. However, if it's over 25 you probably have some extra baggage... ;-) Marko (31, and it's not the age... :-( -- But it's going down all the time!) > -----Original Message----- > From: ext Steve Ames [mailto:steve@energistic.com] > Sent: 04 August, 2004 02:39 > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Weight on your knees > > > On Tue, Aug 03, 2004 at 03:55:45PM -0700, Michael Koblic wrote: > > Your Body Mass Index (weight in kg divided by your height > in metres squared) > > is 28.6. The double construction is for emphasis. In many cases, you can use it for hyperbole, e.g., in Tagalog, "Ang galing-galing mo!" means "You're really good!" Of course, a lot depends on how you say it, if you really mean it, or if you're having fun at your friend's expense, e.g., after doing something spectacularly stupid :-) and you're the only witness :-) :-) something that happens to me every now and then :-) Bot --- Ray Terry wrote: > > I've noticed many FMA terms that are repeated, > such as Palis-Palis, Anting-Anting, Tres Tres, and > more. Other than that, repetitive words are used for making use of the plural. Blackjack has had several incarnations; current owner Ken Warner is reissuing updated Blackjack designs. I picked up on one of his Kukri IIs and have been playing with it for the past several days. It's a very impressive blade. I've been cleanly clearing 1"+ scrub with it as well as slicing up old free hanging climbing ropes with it. The thing is still wicked sharp, shaving hair along its entire edge. I'm somewhat concerned by the relatively thin stock the knife is made from: somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/8". I mentioned my concern to Warner; he replied that the blades AUS8 steel was more than up to the task. If I had deep pockets I'd smack the back of one on an anvil a couple times to see what happens, but my guess is the knife would stand up to its share of abuse. Warner attributes the blade's sharpness to its convex edge design. You don't see many production knives with this kind of grind and it works well, though will likely be a pain to resharpen. Warner claims in can be stropped on cardboard to maintain the edge; I'll reserve judgment 'til I've tried it. While I was questioning Warner about the grind and stock thickness, he let fly with a great quote: "We do with steel and edge design what other kukris do with mass and enthusiasm." His kukris can be found online for around $100 with a decent leather sheath, pretty inexpensive when it comes to kurkris and blades made out of AUS8. Best price I found was to One Stop Knife Shop, or you can order directly from Ken at http://www.knifeware.com/. My guess it that Bando players and kurki fans will find the blade worth checking out. Bong Jornales, a globe-trotting practitioner of the art of stick fighting or arnis, trained and coached the Americans, who beat the Philippines by a mile for the world title in the sport that is supposed to be the Filipinos' forte. A day before leaving for Michigan, where he is currently based, the 55-year old Jornales stressed at the Philippine Sportswriters Association Forum at the Manila Pavilion Tuesday the need for more arnis competitions in the country. "It's rather sad that hardly are there any Filipino arnis tournaments here when, in fact, it's us who are the ones who started it," he said at the program sponsored by Agfa Colors, Red Bull and Pagcor. "Stick fighting is now popular in the US and other countries. And the Americans and Europeans are already specializing in it." Jornales said arnis gained prominence in the 1970s when a master, Danny Inosanto, appeared in the Bruce Lee film Game of Death. Inosanto dueled the late martial-arts star in the movie. He also noted that Filipinos used to reign as world champions in 1998 and 2000. Jornales, who had been to Sweden, Denmark, Brazil and other Southern American countries propagating stick fighting, said it's not too late for Filipinos to renew their interest in arnis. All they need is more exposure to the sport, both here and abroad. "I know na maraming magagaling na players dito, kaya kailangan lang talaga is more exposure para tuluy-tuloy ang interest ng mga Filipino," said Jornales, a father to two grown-up boys and husband to a member of the U.S. team. The country's hosting of the wekaf event is a positive development toward attaining that goal. "Siguro magandang simula 'yun [wekaf hosting]. Hopefully, arnis officials could pick up from there," he added. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2004: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
