I was involved, though not deeply at that time, in training with Tuhon Gaje and Eddie Jaffri in the early to mid 80's. Guro Inosanto has recounted some rather amusing anecdotes regarding their training together as well. Eddie Jaffri played on the edge. He was extreme when the word was not chic. I remember one time in 1982, in Big Spring Texas, that Eddie was yelling at the Indonesian consul's representative because he was more interested in eating than being a representative of his country. Rumour has it that Eddie's passport was revoked subsequently. Eddie sent me several letters from Indonesia in hope of being sponsored here but nothing happened. Tuhon Gaje told me that Eddie died in the 90's. There was no mention of how, where or when. Anyone familiar with the stories and rumors surrounding Don Draeger's passing will be able to see that the Silat world itself is fraught with danger and you don't need to go looking for it with anyone else, it finds you quite easily. I have never heard of any involvement by Tuhon Gaje regarding either Eddie's return to Indonesia or subsequent passing away. At around 3:50 p.m., Keiichi Yamaguchi, 63, a resident of Matsuda, Kanagawa Prefecture, was picking mushrooms on a mountain in Omachi, Nagano Prefecture, when an Asiatic black bear suddenly attacked him, police said. The bear bit Yamaguchi on the hand and left thigh and he responded by hitting it on the nose and in the stomach. When he used a judo technique to hurl the bear, it ran away from the scene. The bear was about 170 centimeters long, police said. Yamaguchi said his injuries are not serious, but he intends to receive medical treatment at a local hospital. (Compiled from Mainichi and wire reports, Japan, Aug. 19, 2003) I wonder what hand techniques were used to strike the nose and stomach And 117 centimeters? Mike and Jimmmy were in the very first group of students that Max taught KdM. Rene came in somewhere later. Max didn't have a whole lot of structure around his KdM, a lot of 'if you do that then I do this'... i.e. he taught the old way. Jimmy and Rene probably did as Mike did, added their own influence and structure to what Max taught them. I haven't seen anything from Jimmy in this area, but I did see Rene's KdM (I think he changed it to CdM) videotape on the subject. I think Mike's two videos are far better, but then I am biased. As I recall Rene's was mostly concepts, Mike created a lot of KdM knife-to-knife drills which he also taught in his videos.
