Yeah, I know, we’re weird…Just don’t take me for granite! I thought the rsponder to my original post had a good point, that I missed. It’s *not* about pain in such a scenario—Cut an important tendon or nerve and the limb/hand/whatever will become useless *regardless* of whether a person feels it. Ditto for bones, it is much harde to throw a punch with a broken clavicle. Remember during the Rodney King Incident how the Police’s expert witness testified that: "the purpose of the baton is to break bones in order to subdue an opponent". I have read that once a fighter is proficient at the basic ranges the (s)he should then integrate the appropriate moves into intermediate ranges, while constantly varying range. i.e. At, say, halfway between ‘close’ and ‘medium’ range, one could use *some* ‘close’ moves and *some* ‘medium’ range ones, depending on what is applicable from their specific art, (or borrow from a different art. Surprise!!) BTW, the girl who does my hair is a Japanese stylist. RE: The "tactical rifle..or a squadron of F-15’s" post/reply. Sure, I love my .308 FN-FAL rifle, but it’s a tough item to keep in my back pocket… In NYC it is also *very* difficult to get a pistol permit unless one owns a business or carries cash for one. Knives, however, are like the American Express card---don’t leave home without it. Telescoping batons are nice too, much simpler to carry than forty inches of rattan.. pulu si bagumba (‘free the prisioners’, in Kupaki) WDNYC ________________________________________________________________ The best thing to hit the Internet in years - Juno SpeedBand! Are these DVDs real DVDs at DVD resolution ? A lot of martial arts DVDs are simply recordings of the original VHS, and I'm certainly not paying for that. Since I already have just about every Inayan VHS video, only a higher resolution video on DVD would be worth the reinvestment. The Inayan Serrada videos are well-produced and executed. I've emailed Guro Hanosh twice but have not received a reply on this matter. Thanks for any info, Gints Klimanis --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 09:06:53 -0400 From: "Clint Cayson" To: Subject: [Eskrima] Techniques First Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello All! Just copied this statement from a Triathlete (Barb Lindquist): "I think one of the most important things about starting in a sport is to learn the technique. You can just kind of go out there and reinforce an inefficient technique and you're not going to get that much faster..." Would anyone agree with this? Thanks. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Van Harn, Steve" To: "Eskrima Digest (E-mail)" Date: Wed, 25 Aug 2004 08:14:39 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] infinitely expanded time period Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Steve Drape wrote: I have another story of leaving a bar after hearing gunshots to find two guys in a clinch on the ground, and the guy on the bottom was in serious trouble from the hands wrapped around his neck, in fact spent time in the hospital because of the trauma to his trachea. We got the guy off him, then found that the guy doing the strangling had been shot four times in the chest with a .357 Magnum. He died shortly thereafter, and the guy we "saved" went to prison. (where he was killed for shooting the other guy, but that's a different story!) My point is simply that hands or knives (and obviously even guns) don't guarantee anything in that short, infinitely expanded time period when stuff is going down. SNIP My comments: This could have been a former co-worker, however he's still perfectly healthy. Mano y Mano was never any fun (self defense according to him of course!). 3-1 or even 5-1 seemed to be more of a real fight. One particular night as he was putting down #'s 4 and 5, he heard the distinct sound of a shotgun being readied by one of the first three he hadn't quite put out. Seems the assailant/victim was able to retrieve his shotgun and get off a shot. My former co-worker crouched and covered thereby presenting the smallest target possible and only taking minor wounds. In the "infinitely expanded time period" between that first shot and when the wielder would have gotten off the second he was able to cover the distance and separate the gun and its owner. More unfortunately for the owner, he rendered the gun useless by destroying it on the owners face, which he cradled with his feet for said purpose. I spent many a day picking his brain and getting to know his mindset and the absence of any reason when the sheet of red rage went through his mind. Same reason he put his father in the hospital for 3 months when he was 15. Working with him was rarely boring when he opened up. It is for this reason I always tread lightly no matter where I go. No matter how confident I might feel, in the back of my mind I always consider that the guy I might run into is another version of him. For Yvonne, if you live near Oakland Park drop me a line and I will tell you how to get to the dojo if you wish to work on Inayan Kadena de Mano. Thanks to all. Marc - I've got a question regarding your last post, which was pretty eye-opening and generally very clear. But thsi one point: "If after darting out of the way, you grab his noodle and are swinging like Tarzan on a vin e from it, he ain't attacking. He may want to, but he's got something else he has to attend to." You had just been talking about attacking the support structure - specifically taking out the legs. So I'm not sure here - what do you mean "swinging from his noodle"? Feel free to swear if it helps to clarify... JK _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Some one who is looking at you from a tactical perspective. When, where and how can he attack to acheive his goal? What many people over look is that while they are looking from a postition of strength at building their defenses. The individual deemed a spincter is looking at those same defenses from a position of weaknesses. Not his, but yours. Where are there gaps, holes and blind spots in your perimeter security? How can he win through your weakness? Weaknesses that he can exploit through a variety of tactics. With all the emphasis for a head to head conflict that occurs in most training, any savage little street weasel worth his salt is going to recognize the indifference paid to subterfuge and trickery. As such, unless he has overwhelming odds on his side, it won't be a frontal assault. Nor most times will he try to sneak his way in as that is something people expect. (Although quite often people who are so focused on a head to head conflict fall easy prey to an overwhelming ambush from behind). No, most times it is just easier to trick your way in. You work your way in under cover of something else until you get into position to strike. And you do so with serious force before the guy has a chance to rally" For us in the vanilla world, can you give some specific examples? I know you keep the best stuff for seminars and I understand that, but maybe just a little taste? Please? Does anyone else have examples? To me understanding this and how to prepare and counter it is more worth while spending time on than learning esoteric techniques. Which is what Marc is saying, I guess. Gee, I am catching on fast...
