It's called "Mind Body & Kick Ass Moves". You can find more on BBC's homepage. There were several segments on the FMA, including Pekiti Tirsia. Does anybody know if BBC will ever sell this series on DVD / tape, or know how I could get a hold of a copy? Thank you. Sincerely, Emil --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 11:51:52 -0400 From: "Clint Cayson" To: Subject: [Eskrima] ... doesn't let this one go..... (Bobbe Edmonds) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "I actually kind of like Baboy Damo! One of my Cebuano students happened to mention to me that in Cebu they often call little children "Baboy" as well, and this gets shortened to the popular nickname "Boy" as they grow up." Bobbe, Your Cebuano student is correct. Kids get tired of calling you names as they grow older... so the least they can remember is calling you "boy" and that etched the name to your back like a tattoo. Some eskrima students have distinctive names also - not animals but with different names - sometimes we laughed at it because it's too native to read. Like for instance, Danny "BATO" Suwan... BATO means stone. William "Iring" Fortunato - IRING is cat because he yells and screams so hard during sparring and lastly and a friend of mine used to call him Antonio "LAWAY" Flores - "LAWAY" means saliva. Because he spits his hands and rub it together before he holds his sticks and spars. But with animals, never have to be ashamed for it because it's more civilized as compared to the persons I know. As for us Bobbe, we just have to embrace the names that people gave us... like you have said before , it's better to have an animal name with skills rather than names that doesn't have the abilities. Respectfully, Clint P.S. Bobbe, tell your Cebuano friend/student to spar like Cebuano does - 'ISUG UG DUGO'. He knows. --__--__-- Message: 5 From: Beungood8@aol.com Date: Mon, 30 Aug 2004 12:48:28 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Expandable Batons Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I am a Police Officer and Pekiti Tirsia Student and one of the tools im armed with is the 26" expandable ASP Baton. Ive spoken to a few of my fellow officers who all echo that it seems to be not too effective in hitting heavy muscular areas and only marginally effective if bony areas are struck due to it's light weight and small diameter of striking area(end piece) and balance in the handle. I started looking at different batons on the market and saw that Winchester marketed thier expandable as a more effective weapon due to it's thicker diameter primary striking area ,heavier weight and weight forward balance favoring the middle and end of the baton and 29" length. Ive heard soem dsay it can collapse when used for thrusting and have said the auto locker from Modadanock was a good tool, but have not run across anyone who has bought one due to it's cost($99.00) It has gotten me to think about which one of those would most replicate a rattan used in training with balance and feel. Anyone have any experience with any of these batons and what are your thoughts? I have an amazing coincidence to report... I learned it from Bob O, except that he did it to one of my students. I bent over and looked at a pair of eyes the size of saucers under Bob's knee and said "Didn't expect that now did you?" Bob is a dear friend of ours (Peyton Quinn lives up the road, Bob down the road). Bob and I often brainstorm about how to effectively explain concepts or chew ideas of "am I seeing this right?" that the other is working on. We use each other's explainations and models all the time. >Do you ever do it one-handed like he does (with the change > in direction, rotating the head left or right and than changing to pushing > straight back) or do you find that it does not work so good? Well that and about 12 other variations of puta kepala. My favorite is slipping to the side when someone throws a heavy punch and basically "stiff arming" the top of the guys forehead and letting his forward momentum do it to him. When facing a young, fit and fast fighting buck, that's one of my favorite "Son, there's a reason I got to be this old, slow and fat" moves. He attacks like greased lightening and while sticking my hand out in a "hep! hep me!" move he just somehow falls down >:D > 2) Love the money trick! I'm not questioning your direct experience in this regard -- just curious why that would be.
