Master Napial was a profoundly gifted martial artist, dedicated to teaching his students the essence and beauty of eskrima and the history of the Filipino culture. I am proud to have known him and studied under him. More importantly, I was blessed to be his friend and my heart aches for him today as I mourn his passing. I will miss him in more ways than I can express in words. Respectfully, John Cipkar Asst. Interesting site. I noticed that their training bolos and dagas had their system logo engraved into the blades. I thought that was a very nice touch. I'm sure this info may have been posted in the past but does anyone know of the blade maker that produced these training weapons. The Sayoc website (www.sayoc.com) has both the "official" Sayoc trainers and some other trainers. I would encourage to visit their site and supplier. It was summer about 15 years ago and I was trotting around DC playing guide to a young lady. She wanted to do all the lame stuff: buy some shredded money from the Bureau of Engraving, browse street vendor trinkets, etc. We'd just departed the Old Post Office and were heading towards Union Station; I remember thinking "when will this silly jaunt end?" She was in the lead heading toward the IRS building, if memory serves. It's kinda hard to describe, but the sidewalk split into 2 sections: one normal sidewalk running along the street and then a covered pedestrian tunnel separated from the normal sidewalk by a series of arches that ran along its length. The young lady opted for the tunnel; I followed her from the bright sunlight of the street into the dark tunnel. As I lifted my sunglasses to my forehead I noted at least a half-dozen figures in the tunnel; the one nearest to us, less than 10 feet away, was vigorously urinating against an arch while staring straight at us. Something wrong with this picture, I began to realize. We slowed, then stopped, while many of the figures started moving toward us. Mmmm, fresh meat, I expect they were thinking. As my eyes adjusted it became clear we'd wandered into 8 or so street people holed up in the tunnel for whatever reason. I'm not sure they planned to assault us, but I expect they intended to conduct an extensive "interview." The young lady started backpedaling, the street folks surged forward, and the switch inside me flicked to "battle stations." I'm told that when I go into battle mode I seem to grow, my expression becomes fiercely focussed, and I begin to emit a sub-audible cat-like growl. I'm always busy when it happens and so can't attest to it, but I do remember a primal flash of rage: the dude standing there with his schlong hanging out really angered me. "Protect woman from bad man with dick and friends, ugh" probably best expresses my primal interior monologue. Back in those days I wore a surplus gasmask bag on my right hip that I kept a raincoat, first aid kit, and other stuff in. At any given time it also contained other interesting items, including a pair of collapsible steel numchucks. As weapons go these 'chucks were fairly ungainly, but they deployed with an impressive series of "ka-chinks," and the hollow ends emitted an ominous low whistle as they cut through the air. I stepped toward the closing street people while bringing out the 'chucks with an upward "X" that ended in a standard ready position. Expect the fellow who still had his sex organ exposed felt a worrisome breeze as I deployed. Their turn to stop, then backpedal; several turned their palms out towards me: "whoa, peace bro." I sidestepped toward an arch, treading in a rivulet or urine along the way, and then crossed through the arch into sunlight, with the young lady behind me. (Found out later I'd nearly clonked her on the noggin while swinging the 'chucks into ready.) I stayed in the ready position as we traversed past the spot our playmates now stood unseen. Realization dawned that I was probably something of a spectacle scuttling along the street: who is that deranged white boy holding the karate thingamajig over his shoulder? Stashed the 'chucks, did some quick E&E in case a concerned citizen called the cops about the crazy man, and found a place to chill out for a bit. The moral of the story most likely is: don't walk into dark tunnels in urban areas, and if you do make them think you're real nuts real fast. My guess is that if we'd just stayed our course we probably would have been mercilessly panhandled, but left otherwise unscathed, though I wouldn't want to bet life or limb on it. Flip side is if I'd started swinging the 'chucks I'd have likely been invited to reside in a DC correctional facility for an unspecified period of time. Bottom line is I was so busy rolling my eyeballs at the tourist shuffle I failed to pay attention to what was going on and had to quickly sort through limited options as a result. Doh! Doh! Personally, I think this *is* the bottom line. Situational awareness allows us to increase the options we have in a given situation. Situations are going to happen. But if we keep on our toes enough we can catch them early enough that we have a lot more options - and one early option is almost always avoidance of the situation to begin with. The more we let our guard down, though, the more off guard we are likely to get caught and the less options we're likely to have available to us when we do realize that a situation is at hand. It's all about options. As I stepped through the door into the elevator lobby area I was met by a masked suspect with what appeared to be a Raven .25 auto in his right hand. He was too far to move toward, as he mumbled something to me to try to get me to stop, I saw the pistol in his hand. I never stopped or slowed. I moved toward a stairway, 4 LONG steps to my left (I thought I might get shot in the back). I stepped into the stairway, drew my 9mm S & W auto. I thought about just opening up the door and shooting him but from the cover of the doorway I gave him verbal directions and he complied immediately. Now, this crack cocaine smoking robber (who was on probation for another robbery...) was inept enough to attempt a robbery within 100 feet of over 50 cops who were in training that day. But because of a rash of bank robberies we had been experiencing (I work in the area of 5 banks), Christmas was approaching (twas the season for mayhem) and that I was thinking about personal safety that day as I walked along (I had been contracted to instruct social workers and was getting my lesson plan ready), I was "in the moment" and thinking/planning about my safety. More than any other facet mental awareness is the key to protection. Yes, pistols are nice as are OC spray, edged weapons, impact weapons, etc... but without the mental edge of awareness your self protection strategies are just wishful thinking. So giving space between you and the car in front of you and other tactics are great but throw a driver into the equation that is talking on his/her cell phone or messing with their kids in the backseat, etc... instead of paying attention and the tactic is voided by extended reaction time. As a sidenote, several of my fellow coppers came up to me that day and said that they hadn't brought their pistol to work that day because, "they were going to training." I have noticed this of veteran lawmen that ought to know better. It is work to think and plan for your personal safety (just as it is work to train in the FMA) but this should be thought of as sweat equity for something that you hope never happens...
