I would not place much faith in them as realistic force on force training tools. The Airsoft guns do not generate enough of a pain penalty to keep the tactics realistic. The Simunitions or paint ball guns do provide enough pain penalty but only if protective gear is kept to a minimum. Head, neck, eyes and groin must be protected but gloves, multiple layers of clothes and ballistic vests should be avoided. For role players simulating a difficult or heavily armored opponent it is necessary to use heavy protective gear but students training for police work or civilian self defense need an immediate and harsh penalty for bad tactics. It is also important that training is set up to allow good tactics to succeed , it is easy and sometimes amusing to set up no win situations for the students; however this will drive students away or push them into heavy protective gear. I wanted to let everyone know that Master Chuck Cadell will be conducting a FMA seminar on Oct. 16th from 9:00am to 6:00pm in Collinsville IL. The cost is only $60.00 prior to Oct. 16 or $70.00 the day of the seminar. Master Cadell will be presenting principles and techniques from Kali and Serrada Eskrima. The curriculum will consist of double stick, single stick, knife, and empty hand tactics and responses. Master Cadell is one of only sixteen men in the world to be awarded the rank of master instructor by the founder of Serrada Eskrima, Grandmaster Angel Cabales. In addition, Master Cadell has also received instruction from other notable Filipino masters and grandmasters. He also conducts hand to hand and firearms training throughout the state of Illinois for law enforcement agencies and corrections. Don't miss this great opportunity! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello all, I am trying to find a good chiropractor in the Marina Del Rey area or a close vicinity. Crafty and others have mentioned a few that they have used in the past. I have a friend who recently took a medical retirement from the P.D. who doesnt have any experience with Chiros who lives in the area. I was hoping to find a few good references for him. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Has anyone on here ever had any problems with thoracic outlet syndrome ? I started experiencing this problem a couple of months ago after some strenuous surfing. It has been wreaking havoc on my FMA's and conditioning. Most of the Dr's I have come upon here in Hawaii must belong to the "Third world medical assn" I'm sure there are some good ones here after you get referred through the mediocre ones. Im just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and if so, what did and didnt work for them.. Ungoy __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! I found that most of my teenage male martial arts students are better armed (with airsoft)than I am! For the police classes, airsoft is the way to go as the guns are almost exact replicas of what we carry. The more expensive route is purchasing simunitions kits for your current firearms. I have ones for my Beretta and HK USP. The dept. has the ones for AR15 and MP5. The airsoft does not hurt as much as sims....... Wear protective eye gear/full face mask...and a groin protector. Ahh, that was another wonderful learning experience. It is just that paint ball guns are not realistic enough and simunition guns hit so hard that for safety one must wear a lot of protective gear. Not so with Airsoft, just shooting glasses and you're ready to go. But hearing a simunition round fly right past your head is pretty much like the real thing... Date: Thu, 16 Sep 2004 18:29:32 -0400 From: "Jared Dame" To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I suffered from thoracic outlet syndrome in 1997. There are three types that can occur one is that the neurovascular bundle suffers compression around the brachial plexus where in the TOS can effect either the nerves, brachial artery, brachial vein, subclavian artery and vein, or in more extreme cases two or more of these. In my case it was the subclavian vein that affected. The history leading up to that point was one of a couple months of noticing that my right arm appeared larger than my left arm, well based on the fact that I worked out consistently this only raised one issue with me. I was working my right arm harder than my left; it was not until two and half months later did I realize that this was not the case when during my weight lifting program I became short of breath with extreme chest pain localized in the right pectoral region radiating down the arm. To make a really long and boring story short I ended up going to the hospital where I was admitted an emboli zed blood clot in my right lung, it appeared as the congenital problem persisted and pinched that vein off that a blood clot occluded the area preventing the right arm for draining the blood at the same volume that the artery was supplying it. My doctors gave me two options, first one was to allow my chest to atrophy so that the range of motion did not give rise to similar issues down the road, or the second option which was to have my first rib taken out to allow for the chest and vein to get a long better in the chest cavity. My martial arts practice (Kempo Karate at the time), and physical activities were more important to me than the pain and recovery that the surgery would affect me with so I opted for surgery, and fourteen months later I resumed my Martial practice again. I will sign off with stating that it did take about three years in order to be the same speed and range of motion with my upper body, but you do receive a great deal of awareness to the issue after going through that surgery and physical therapy. I have enclosed a couple of web links for you to read up on the issues, and good luck with everything. http://www.tos-syndrome.com/newpage2.htm http://www.handsurgeon.com/thoracic_outlet.html http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/fact/thr_report.cfm?Thread_ID=206&topcategory=Shoul der http://www.ecentral.com/members/rsanders/ Peace to all, Jared -----Original Message----- From: Karol Krauser [mailto:shugyo66@yahoo.com] Sent: Thu 9/16/2004 7:15 AM To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] thoracic outlet syndrome... I thought it might be of passing interest to some on this digest: I have just returned from Paris, France. I have visited three knife shops: Armes Bastille, Courty and Fils and Kindal. All of them have awesome selection, unfortunately with prices to match. I managed to buy an original Fred Perrin "La Griffe", which is almost certainly a second, as others cost twice as much and were well out of my financial reach. Another attraction for lovers of edged things is the Marche aux Puces near the Porte de Clignancourt. A patient search through the hundreds if not thousands of antique stalls turned up specialists dealing with all kinds of weapons. Not that I could afford any of those either, but the kindly store owner let me play with a number of blades. I felt like a kid in a sweet shop! So if you are visiting and have a few Euros to spare, enjoy!
