Mui Thai fighters kick above the waist, below the waist, wherever we want to. We also prove that high kicks are combat effective, everytime we knock an opponent out by planting our shin right behind their ear. My feeling about FMA, and Mui Thai, and everything else, is that an art that focuses on a specific technique will become VERY good at that technique. Ditto the individual practicioner. For example, you can't beat Capoeira for headbutts. , , ," In a related vein, in DBMA thanks to the pioneering efforts of Salty Dog, an important strand of influence is Krabi Krabong-- KK being the Thai military weaponry forerunner to the ring sport of Muay Thai. Kicking during stickfights is part of our system. I'm curious about the Capoeira headbutting comment. I've seen some Cap that impressed me greatly (Maestre Boneco used to teach at the Inosanto Academy) but was not aware of the headbutting side of the art. Would you share with us what impresses you about it? TIA Crafty Dog --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Marc Denny" To: Date: Mon, 20 Sep 2004 22:47:55 -0700 Subject: [Eskrima] Chris Patrelli contact info? The focus being on competition within the structure of their sport. I train in weapons, grappling and panatukan/sikaran and find that there are a lot of variables and ranges to be training, in this art. It makes me well rounded but I dont think I can beat a specialist in grappling or a specialist in kickboxing, etc. etc. within the area of their specialization. I was hoping someone on the Digest might also know them, and have current contact info for one or the other. The last I heard, Steve was running a small club in Maryland (he's certified under Guro Inosanto), and Jim was training in Colorado with one of the Sayoc family groups. Both rumors are a couple of years old now, so if you know anything more current about either guy, send it my way! ------------ We now return you to our regularly scheduled FMA programming, already in progress... -- Andrew Maddox, madsox squiggle radix point net Hey! Therefore whilst I do agree that a good strong kick is a good takeout measure especially at long range it can spoil the kicker's day if a knive happens to be extendeding from the calf or thigh muscle, just to mention a few body parts. A few years ago a kung fu, mu thai trained person who was taking photograph our group claimed that he could kick a knive out of our hands or floor any of us with a kick and not get cut. David Foggie who was taking the class invited the person to turn up next week in a white t-shirt and face one of the younger member who would have a black texta. Anyway the photographer turned up with no t-shirt and the game began. Yes he did get in a kick and was very proud of himself. He then looked in the mirror and was horrified to see that he had black texta marks over his whole body, slash marks across the neck, and multiple marks over the stomach, chest, back and kidneys. I myself had a try and succeeded in putting the texta into the persons thigh. Eventually most people from the group had a try and all succeeded in putting black texta marks to vital body parts. This is not a personal attack on Mu Thai as Mu Thai does have some good comabatative techniques, rather you should consider that fact that the philiosphies are slightly different. When you face an opponent who is holding a weapon what is their intent? Is it the same as facing an opponent in the ring without a weapon. As you said your self you take them out with a kick. I interpret this to mean that you knock them out. Using parts of all styles to form our own personal fighting standard should be the goal of any martial artist. ciao Jared -----Original Message----- From: gordon walker [mailto:chenstyle44@yahoo.ca] Sent: Tue 9/21/2004 10:40 AM To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] specializing HI, In regards to the kicks of Muay Thai versus FMA, I think that the art of Muay Thai is very effective due to the conditioning of the students and the specialized training that they receive in their art. It will be held on Saturday, October 30th at Given Recreational Center in Austin, Texas. The doors will open at 10:30am and the action will start at 11am. We are pleased to announce as promised the introduction of our newest Segment, the Open Weapons Division. This division will be the first specialty division to host a Title Belt which, we are sure will bring even more action to the stage. Most recently in our news, our previous Champion, Jason Lemond will not be able to defend his Title due to back surgery. This means he will have to forfeit the Title. This means we will have to host an Invitational Division with all the current Stick Contenders to fight for the Submission Stick Title. We will also be offering a chance for anyone to fight via a wildcard slot! This entitles the 1st place winner of the Submission Stick Division a chance to fight with the top contenders for the Title! On top of all of this action, we are planning several contender matches with five rounds of action each as well as our other great divisions from the Spring. Our tournament normally hosts two bladed divisions with rules for both sword and knife. During this event we will be introducing a double elimination format for the bladed divisions giving us 1st through 4th places for awards. We will also be working our Submission Divisions in both Stick and Knife which always promote tons of continuous action by allowing the competitor's to work the weapon, empty hand strikes and grappling! Finally, on top of all of this, we will be also introducing our first Team Competition Awards. This will be a great chance for those schools that come out and have more than one person competing. We will take a percentage of the entire events score from each team and award 1st - 3rd places to the teams that do the best in the entire day! Stay tuned to the website (www.EdgeFighting.com) for more announcements and new rule updates. The website will also be featuring the release of The Edge 2003 video footage for your purchase. The 2003 video tape is edited down to a mere two and a half hours of non stop action on the stage at Stubb's BBQ. This is a great opportunity for you to analyze fights as well as just watch some great action! Please contact us if you are interested in competing or even just visiting Austin and watching some great action. We are already excited about the turn out and the momentum that this third tournament is bringing. Call 512.339.8264 or email us at martialway@hotmail.com for any more information. We hope to see you all there, Larry St. Clair --__--__-- Message: 9 From: Ray Terry To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net (Eskrima) Date: Wed, 22 Sep 2004 13:00:35 -0700 (PDT) Subject: [Eskrima] we were down Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Our webserver was down for the last day+.
