Actually, a lot much less than what you Americans have. The only Masonic influences in this country are the triangle on our Philippine flag, the Masonic "sun of liberty" on the flag (which BTW used to have a smiling Masonic face), and the tricolor of red, white, and blue. Despite the fact that almost all Katipunan bigshots and many of the officials of the Revolutionary government of our first President, Emilio Aguinaldo, were Masons, the majority of our people were religious (albeit animistic and superstitious because they were denied education and room to think by the Spaniards for 300 plus years), and did not share Masonic ideas. Thus, despite the fact that Pinoys could easily kill friars in rage for the oppression they endured for years during the Revolution, they were also very religious and devoted to priests in general, that to this day you have kids kissing the hand of the village priest after Mass (even in urbanized cities) and the Catholic Church wields a very large influence in social and political thought. Think Mexico. Despite the anti-Church backlash of the early 1900s, Mexicans today and ever since have always been loyal to Catholicism and their priests. Same in my country. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! I read in the book MASTERS OF ARNIS, KALI, ESKRIMA by the late PG Edgar Sulite that Tatang Ilustrisimo had an oracion, and that he passed on oracions to both masters Tony Diego and Romy Macapagal. Oracions and anting-anting are not the only elements of the mystical aspects of FMA, though. Master Romy Macapagal of Kalis Ilustrisimo made reference to a Tagalog term "tigalpo" which has no real equivalent in English, but which I have heard of quite sometimes, although I don't know how exactly it works. I met this security guard in our law school who told me about his grandfather in Samar who would practice his oracion on the midnight of Good Friday (when Good Friday turns into Black Saturday) during the Catholic Holy Week or "Semana Santa". The old manongs would recharge their oracions at midnight, spar with live swords, and according to the security guard, the old men would float a la "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" as they sparred in the thickness of the banana tree groves. He told me that some of those manongs looked rather mild-mannered but inspired fear among most civilians in their village, the kind of fear that no one would want to challenge them. In Metro Manila, the oracions are still prevalent among some masters, but I'd say that perhaps only 50% of arnis masters here still believe in them. There have been many occasions where fighters w/ oracion lost to really skilled fighters who had no oracion or anting-anting, thus contributing to the skepticism. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Sounds like a somewhat uncommon misconception. Religion and Freemasonry are not at odds. In fact a person must believe in God to become a Mason. Beginning with the church's capture, torture and killing of many of the Knights Templar in the early 14th Century, the Catholic church has been down on Masonry. But the Masons have nothing against the Catholic church. In fact a great many good Catholics are Masons. As are Muslims, Christians and Jews... and lodge is always opened and closed with prayer. It wasn't just the Pope that was involved. Of course, this is where the whole 'Friday the 13th is a bad day' comes from. As for headbutt advice, don't use the front of your head a la Hollywood. The inside of your cranium has a ridge running down your forehead, and you can bash the most delicate part of your brain against it. Try using the side of your skull. One of the best moves I've seen regarding a headbutt is as follows: When someone gives you a two-handed shove (like a schoolyard bully would), go with it, but grab their wrists and pull them with you, turning your head sideways and towards them. Even demo'd at 50%, I've seen bloody noses from this. Rockford is about 1.38 hrs from where I live. I do have a weekly class in Chicago twice a week and conduct seminars in the surrounding suburbs (Wheeling, Elgin and Roselle, IL). We do have a Defensor Method chapter in Elgin, Illinois being handled by Demetrio Ruiz and Jason Brigham, both teach (MWF 3x per week) the "Defensor Method Of Filipino-Indonesian Martial Arts" which does include heavy emphasis on Serrada. And yes, Kim is right on the money, I learned Serrada from Al McLuckie, Mike Inay, Rob McDonald (two sessions worth), Jimmy Tacosa, and took seminars from Angel Cabales. Currently, our Association does sponsor seminars and attend events/camps with Suro Jason Inay. We have individuals in our group tied/certified with the late Mike Inay and currently with Jason Inay. In addition we have alliances with GT Gaje, Doce Pares, San Miguel Eskrima, Jimy Tacosa, Gat Puno Abon Baet, Guro Dan Inosanto, the late Batikan Tobosa, Pandekar Eddie Jafri, the late John DeJong, and Bob Orlando.
