In fact, I would like to become a Freemason myself, and I do not see any inherent conflict between Masonry and my Catholic beliefs. However, the Catholicism we have in former Spanish colonies like mexico, puerto rico, south america, and the Philippines is not the variant you guys have in the US. Catholicism in countries which were former Spanish colonies isn't just a religion, it pervades an entire culture. Thus you have either a social backlash in which priests get lynched during revolutions or persecuted (as Mexico did back in the early 1900s), or you have a society like the Philippines where people are very religious and unquestioning with their beliefs. We have a Tagalog term for that, "saradong katoliko" (extremely devout Catholic) which means that the person concerned won't question doctrine. Although I suspect that our lack of success at population control is not due to the Church but rather due to the lack of education and independent thinking among the greater majority of my countrymen, the masses, it is still safe to say that the Church controls the way things operate in this country. Masonry embraces individualism and tolerance. Filipinos are not exactly tolerant. Sure, we tolerate homosexuals more than you Americans do, and we're not at all xenophobic as most of you can say from experience training with manongs and visiting my country. Masonry teaches people to think for themselves. This I think is the bottomline--if Masonry influenced Pinoy culture, then why aren't we free-thinking, tolerant, reflective and sober people? Why are we like dumb sheep following shepherds who are either local politicians or demagogues or Church officials? Masonry is against superstition. Why are most Pinoys superstitious as to believe stuff that I don't think even the National Enquirer would believe, such as a pregnant woman giving birth to a fish? If Masonry's ideals were deeply embedded in Pinoy culture, why aren't we independent thinkers as Americans and most of today's Western Europeans are? Even in the US, I don't think Masonry has permeated US culture further than influencing the layout of Washington DC and imprinting Masonic symbols on the US dollar bill, and the proopagation of the ideals of democracy and tolerance. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? My friend also trains at the Yaw-Yan Temple in Pasay City, under master Saladin Dacuyan. I was told that Master Dacuyan's kids train at an early age, but you have to check out for yoruself and make inquiries and see if it's appropriate for your kid to be doing hard kicking at his age. Master Kobayashi teaches Yaw-Yan in a format that is more palatable to suburbanites like myself in that he conducts classes in a dance studio. Although I'm sure he also makes use of kicking bags and pads and emphasizes hard contact, it would be more acceptable for your son in that the training environment is more, should we say, "world class". The YY Temple in Pasay City is more for hardcore types, IMHO, as I was told. Master Kobayashi also teaches "Hybrid Yaw-Yan" where he incorporates grappling (I think some sambo) with his YY. Now I thnk that would be a better option for your kid, since it teaches BOTH grappling and striking and most of the students of Hybrid YY are typical suburbanites, so you won't have to worry about the kind of physical contact your son will get. ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Free-Masonry in the U.S. doesn't hold the influence it once did in the States this is true, but Free Masonry did directly influence the founding fathers of our country. Our whole Constitution is set up along Masonic ideals. The craft is waning in the States now. __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? New and Improved Yahoo! The rest left, like J.DeMolay. ??? Jacques de Molay did not leave. He was arrested along with another 15,000 members of the holy order. De Molay was burned to death in front of the Cathedral of Notre Dame the evening of March 18, 1314. About the only Templars that escaped the sting operation on Friday the 13th were those outside of French held territory, e.g. Wales, Scotland, etc. Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 10 From: <1@msfencing.org> To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] P.S. to masons Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 20:43:45 -0500 Organization: 1@msfencing.org Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > ???
