Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Blessings, fellow Escrimadors. I have a friend in Sacramento, California who works on the police force. I am very concerned for him, and would like him to be persuaded to join a good school out there. Anyone who can refer me to a good school of Escrima/Kali out there, I would greatly appreciate it! My friend is a great Christian friend and a great family man! Also, I have pressing family concerns which I feel I should mention here. I have a wife (who is a college student) and young son (4 yrs old) and we live in what we thought was a nice neighborhood, until a few months ago. There was a smash-and-grab on my car, my neighbor's car was stolen, and my upstairs neighbor had her door pried open with a crowbar then kicked in, and they stole alot of expensive things (what if someone was home?). I am concerned for my family. How can I persuade my wife that self-defense is what she really needs to know right now? AND- how young can I begin some kind of training for my son? I want to rest assured that my family can handle themselves, I am not content with knowing the art myself. All advice is welcome. Lastly, I thought I'd mention here that in about two to three years I may be moving to Houston, Texas. Coming from a Serrada background, I am interested in all forms of Indo/Malaya/Filipino arts, and expect that I will rely heavily on the arts to cushion the hard transition. But most definitely I will need to be directed to a good school of Arnis/Kali/Escrima! Are there any good Silat shools in that area? I hope so... oh, and maybe anybody knows a good Silat (yahoo?) list I can join? Peace and Blessings, Peace Out, Til Da Boondocks... hehe your friend John. --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? vote.yahoo.com - Register online to vote today! --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 21:58:15 -0700 (PDT) From: Leo Salinel To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Was GM Leo Giron a FreeMason? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just as a large number of the Filipino revolutionary heroes and officials were arnisadors/eskrimadors, a large number (in fact almost all of the more prominent ones) were also Freemasons. Our first president Emilio Aguinaldo, the national heroes Andres Bonifacio and Jose Rizal, and practically everyone else who was a who's who in Philippne revolutionary history was a Mason. Even Reverend Father Gregorio Aglipay, an Ilocano priest who eventually founded the Philippine Independent Church, was a Mason while he was a Catholic priest.:) Was GM Leo Giron's "Legionarios del Trabajo" a Masonic or Neo-Masonic group of Pinoy farmworkers in Stockton? ===== Earn $$ just by receiving and reading email! http://www.resource-a-day.net/member/index.cgi?Brandon96 __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? If > Masonry's ideals were deeply embedded in Pinoy > culture, why aren't we independent thinkers as > Americans and most of today's Western Europeans are? To me this sounds like there's a lot of irony in it, or at least there should be. I don't think _any_ nation can boast having the major populae of independent thinkers, it's the goold old bell curve (Gaussian curve) that tells the sad but true fact: most people are sheep, as you put it. It's much easier to follow rules than make them, or ignore them totally. And even though the Masonic point of view is an idealistic way of seeing things, that does not mean the majority of the people would follow it. I think the same goes with martial arts. It's a painful and long way to mastery, even though the martial arts skills are not secret in a sense they were in the past, why aren't most or all of the people who have ever practised some martial art, masters? Because it takes guts, determination, effort and a lot of time to become one. And still (I think), most people are not cut out to be one. - Marko --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Sun, 26 Sep 2004 23:56:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Felipe Jocano Subject: RE: [Eskrima] The Metaphysical elements in the FMA To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Marko; I wouldn't know if anyone has shared any with you privately over the net, but from the little I know, it isn't likely that anyone will share them publicly on this egroup. Oraciones (in Tagalog orasyones) are usually a private matter; they are transmitted on a personal basis; and one of the factors in the transmission is the personal relationship between the giver and the receiver, which includes the giver's personal knowledge of the receiver's personal character. Therefore for you to receive any, the giver has to know you personally. I don't think it would help you to be asking for any unless you have a pressing need for it, and then the giver has to be someone known for his/her abilities in this area. Regards, Bot .> Does anyone know some oracions, by the way (that > they can > share)? > > - Marko > > . __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Since several different styles of FMA were represented among the participants, some people found it easier than others to adjust to and follow the footwork being taught by the instructor. Earlier today, an e-mail arrived with the same sort of questions and I think that it would be fun to see how our ER subscribers would answer these questions: 1. What type of footwork do you use in your particular style of FMA? 2. Do you have a single footwork pattern or multiple patterns in your particular system? 3. Is your particular system based on largo, medio or corto range? 4. Does your striking system use a 5, 7, 9,or 12 count method? Please explain. 5. How do your stick strikes fit into or accompany your footwork? Thanks in advance for your answers to these questions. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Dexter Labanog has a school in Sacramento called "Traditional Eskrima". They practice on Tuesdays and Sundays (after church). Dexter is the Master Instructor for Bahala Na (Giron Arnis Escrima) Martial Arts. Dexter is also a certified SLD (Serrada, Largo Mano, De Cuerdes) instructor under Dentoy Revillar. www.bahalana.com is his website if you need directions and rates for his classes. Dexter is big time into practical/real life uses of Filipino Martial Arts and particiapates in as many escrima tournaments as he has time for. Sunday classes are held in Stockton where the class is almost all full contact stick fighting (with padded sticks). Dexter is a very personable instructor and I have always found him to be easy to talk to and willing to impart his knowledge of the FMAs. I know he has been practicing since the late 60's early 70's. Under many instructors such as Leo Giron and Dentoy Revillar. Hope this helps! --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Aaron Alejandro" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Was GM Leo Giron a FreeMason? Hi Aaron, Yes, GME Giron was a member of the Legionarios del Trabajo that was a Filipino American Masonic group. There ties are with the Philippines that were the national patriots and members of the Katipunan. Best Regards, GM Tony Hope this helps.
