To: Date: Tue, 28 Sep 2004 03:13:29 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] Question about Kuntao Silat Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello fellow FMA'ers, I am just trying to make up my mind about something, and I'm hoping some of you guys out there can help me. I've been doing Kali for about 2 years now, Doce Pares style, and I was thinking of taking up another martial art. Since I wanted to stay true to my fidelity to south east asian MA's, I decided to look into silat, since I've also heard that it's a good add-on/complement to Kali and has a lot of similarities. We have a Kuntao Silat instructor here in the city, and I went to check him out. He looks like he knows what he's teaching, he's one of the most senior students of Uncle Bill without giving any names, but there is one thing that is holding me back and I can't make up my mind. We all know that Kali or any other FMA's are pretty simple and straight forward arts to learn and master, and are lots of fun at the same time, compared to other more traditional arts from neighbouring China, Japan, etc. and that is what I like about FMA. On the other hand, after doing quite some extensive research, I see that Uncle Bill's student are only a dedicated small handful spread out across the continent. These guys stayed with him for tens of years training to acheive the rank and skill they currently possess. Now, the problem... I don't want to spend 25 years trying to master an art!!!!!! These guys talk about training with him in Kuntao the chinese aspect, and then the Silat the Indonesian side of it, and blending it all together, and making a big mix of things, and then you got monkey boxing and I don't know what. I mean it looks really cool and interesting, and I'd love to learn it all, but can someone really grasp just the basics of this art at least, without spending ten years at the minimum in hard training? That is what is keeping me from starting, I don't want to take up something and then leave it later. And especially I don't want to feel that I didn't learn anything after leaving if I do decide to move on. What do you guys think? Anyone care to comment or has anyone trained in Kuntao Silat to give me more explanations? Thanks a lot for your help, Alex. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Tue, 28 Sep 2004 08:03:51 -0400 (EDT) From: Andrew Maddox To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] advertising another list Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Mr. T, feel free to axe this post if it's not appropriate. Otherwise, here goes: I've noticed a fair number of posters these days on the Digest here from the general Washington, DC region - so I'd like to put in a plug for my small, struggling mailing list for (in my grand delusions) all kinds of martial artists in the DC area. Please check it at http://sports.groups.yahoo.com/group/dcmartialarts/ (most everybody is on at least one Yahoo group, this one works just the same way), join it, spread the link around, and help me make it active! In this case, more really is better! Selamat! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In all respect, when I die- let italso be doing something which I have such an absolute passion for. Yes, Mike Inay was very influental in spreading Escrima in my part of Northern Cali which is Santa Clara County. In fact, my uncle Mike was taught most if not all he knows of Escrima from one of Suro Inay's direct students, my great-uncle Ray Subega. I owe a great deal to him (Mike Inay) because of what I am being taught by my uncle Mike. May his art and legacy continue to flourish, as well as the arts of his masters. I will also note here a few great Escrimadors I've met since becoming a student who were also direct students of Inay's and fellow students of my great-uncle's, namely Guro Garry Bowldes and his buddy Guro John Peterson. Both great people with whom I share a great love of both FMA's and Kung Fu flicks! Big ups to them! Anybody a student of my uncle Ray's? Holler at me! And, to the guy who shared that info on the Bahala Na school in Sac, thanks! I greatly respect Master Giron's legacy, he truly was an American war hero and an Escrima legend of our time. I will forward this info to my good buddy. Last, I would once again like to inquire if anybody has any info on Arnis/Silat schools in or near Houston Texas? Any info is well appreciated, as I may be relocating there indefinitely. I have heard of a swordsmithing school there, which I may look up as soon as I get there :) ... I would not be surprised if Nate doesn't remember me, to tell you the truth. We were introduced to so many people in those days, Degerberg's was such an incredible learning experience for me that I can't remember everyone I trained with, as they with me. A typical crowd for a seminar was easily 150+ people, and we never knew who would show up to participate. For example, at a Danny seminar once, Larry Hartsell came in from North Carolina to attend, and I spent several hours with him one-one-one as he told me about the old days of training with Bruce Lee and James Lee (Oakland phase of JKD). That was over 20 years ago, but I remember like it was yesterday; sitting and talking with Larry about martial arts, what a genuine and generous person he was, one of the nicest people I've ever had the pleasure to spend time with. Fred Degerberg is the same; humble, genuine, open, a true gentleman, and like Larry, one of the most talented martial artists I've ever seen in action. I met Richard Bustillo the same way, and found him to also be a very decent person, very helpful to us during the seminar, and very open and down to earth when I got to talk one-on-one with him. Richard even invited me out to the old Filipino Kali Academy when it was still located on Normandie in L.A. All in all, the years I spent at Degerberg's (I attended seminars there about every 6 to 8 weeks) hold some of the most cherished memories I have in martial arts. I met some amazing people, saw some absolutely incredible martial artists in action, and will remember those days always. I've encouraged the person who contacted me on-line for Serrada instruction to seek Nate out, and told him that any drive to get to Nate would be time well invested. Nate is an excellent martial artist, with a wealth of knowledge to share. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey There, I teach out here in Sacramento, in the suburb or Rancho Cordova. My classes are Monday and Wednesday 7-8:30pm and Saturday 12-1:30pm. I run a club not a school. I teach Doce Pares San Miguel and Multi-style. He's welcome to drop in any time. If he's an LEO he can work in when he comes by and see if it's something he wants to do. My website is www.capitaldocepares.com he can go there for more information. I also know a bunch of people out here that teach in different areas and teach different styles. Somebody here recommended Dexter Labanog and I do to. I have a link to his website on mine. As for training your family, it's hard to make people understand that self defense is important, but more importantly, that it's possible. Many people haven't been exposed to an art that they can actually DO. Finding the right art, might help make self defense seem like an actually realistic possiblity. I would assess her strengths and weaknesses both physically and mentally and try to find something that fits her. That may mean that you'd have to shed some of your own prejudices about what is effective. Food from McDonalds might not be the most healthy but it will get you full. You may also want to consider a firearms training course for her because martial arts aren't for everybody. Best of luck. ===== Be Cool.
