Usually one can find a lot of negatives at martial art tournaments but this tournament was a total positive experience. Several schools and systems were represented including Bakbakan Kali, Vee Arnis and Doce Pares among others. I was also amazed to see that one of the referees was Wilfredo Roldan a highly rated karate point fighter back in the 70's. Although his students were wearing Nisei Goju Ryu shirts and uniforms he told me that one of his instructors was Professor Vee. The fighting categories were padded long sword, sword and dagger, single stick and double stick. There was also padded stick and live stick with minimal armor (headgear and hand pads) which proved to be the most exciting matches. Knife fighting was also included and the competition was topped off with some crowd pleasing grappling matches. The tournament was fast paced and in my opinion the judging was fair. If I was to make one negative comment it would not be against the tournament it would be that in some of the matches, the fighters did not respect the weapons because of all the padding. I would recommend this tournament to all who want to test their skills. If I could I would attend this event on an annual basis but I would have to take into consideration hurricanes like Jeanne which caused my flight back home to be delayed for one day. BTW, it was a pleasure meeting Guro John Jacobo, a future leader in the path of FMA. Now for those of you who don't know Dempsey's fighting record of his 64 bouts, 60 were by knock out. Not technical, but the guy on the mat. His shortest bout was 14 seconds before his opponent was on the deck. Needless to say, Dempsey knew a thing or two about punching with power. On top of that a copy of the 1950 edition went for $450 on ebay recently. And good luck finding the 1980s reprint for under $200. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0913111007/002-6836390-8377638?v=glance I bought mine back in the 80's and I ain't selling mine. Here's the blurb the mad scientist sent *************************************** A reprint of Dempsey's Championship Fighting: Explosive punching and aggressive defense from the hardback 1950 edition is being done. Pre-printing orders can be placed at www.roachesoftheintellect.net by clicking on the ad. Cost is 60 with 5 shipping in the US. We will be ordering a limited number and anyone interested is advised to pre-order. These guys are brilliant and not afraid to speak their mind about the BS that goes on about bladework. I was a regular there for a number of years, but I got married, the wife had a child, and things slowed down for me considerably in my martial arts travels due to other priorities. After several years of being away, my wife had business in Chicago one day, and I went along for the ride. We found ourselves just a few miles from Fred's, so I decided to drop in and say hello. I hadn't seen Fred for a few years, but when the secretary at the door went up to his office to tell him I was there for a visit, I heard Fred's voice throughout the building, "Kim's here???" and here came Fred down the hall; he remembered me after all those years, and took time out of his busy schedule to see me. He was most gracious to my wife, took her on a tour of the academy, and we ended up in Fred's office, shooting the breeze and catching up. We spent a couple of hours there, but it was one of the most enjoyable times I ever got to spend with Fred. He is one of a kind, and I am most fortunate to know him. We need more people like Fred in the arts; a true gentleman, an amazing martial artist, and an all-around good guy. The list of people I met at Degerberg's is a long one, but a few of the most memorable are Dan Inosanto, Mike Inay, Jimmy Tacosa, Richard Bustillo, Larry Hartsell, Michael Amistoso, Christi Alonzo, Nate Defensor, Gary Clyman, Cliff Lenderman, Chris Kent, Paula Inosanto, Chai Sirisute (that meeting is a story in itself!!!), the list goes on. I am sure that I'll never be in that sort of environment again, but man, was it ever worth it!!!! I was a student of Alan McLuckie, Rob McDonald, and Ben Berry back in those days, and continue as a student of Rob's. I'm wondering, did you ever get to know Al, Rob, or Ben? Well, I'm no expert, but I'll try to explain what *I* mean by the term[0], on one condition - stop calling me "sir"! ("Andy" is fine, really, and much more appropriate). In my strange little world, "chicken stepping" is basically just a heavily back-weighted footwork, with the front leg coming up kind of like, say, a goju-ryu cat stance. It (chicken step) usually works best in either a female triangle (bad ASCII art below) or a side-to-side motion, where you're moving away from an attack. It's useful for getting quickly off the centerline, and secondarily for setting that front leg up to snap in a quick kick or leg-check. At least, that's what I mean by the phrase. Female triangle: \ / \ / \/ base Hmm. I guess it would also work for the "trapezoid" step, which I'll *try* to draw here: _______ / \ / \ / \ /________________\ base 1 base 2 This is where your base 1 is the right leg, and you step up and across to make "base 2" your left leg, the other leg being up along the diagonal there, facing an opponent who's up on that top straight line. Sorta. ><> And that, too. Knock it off. Please! Did this help? Or did I just confuse things more? I split the original "hub" at http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/martialarts.html into two separate smaller hubs, that of Martial Arts Training and Martial Arts Culture. It began to dawn on me that there are apparently a lot of people who don't realize that there is a difference in these two concepts. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi fellow martial artists, I want to ask all of you if you too have experienced the notion from non martial artists that martial arts are worthless? Usually one of my friends open their big mouths that I know "karate; or kung fu, or some kind of martial arts', even after I explain to them why I like to keep this thing personal and it's not knowledge for everyone to know about me. Inevitably i get the old "Well i seen this karate guy getting his ass kicked. I usually ask how come i never see any karate guys out fighting people in the streets?' I've had more than just one experience like this and some of them have almost gotten me into an actual fight. So I guess what I'm getting at is, do you believe that the rest of the world believes that martial arts are worthless to them, if so why? Any experiences would be helpful.
