I know of a few in the St. Louis area. There is Master Cadell in Fairview Heights. Apex Martial Arts, they teach the Inosanto blend. Erol Weber teaches in Belleville at Balanced Dynamics. Finally, I teach in Collinsville at New World Martial Arts academy. Also, you may interested to know that Master Cadell will be cunducting a FMA seminar on October 16th from 9:00am to 6:00pm. He will cover priciples and techniques from Kali and Serrada Eskrima. Trust me you do not want to miss this! Hope that helps. If you need more info I can be reached at 618-344-9675. Vaguely I remember his face but I definitely remember his name - when you were his student, did you see his samurai sword? Stories I heard that the "Japanese" master you told me was a Colonel in Imperial Army stationed in Bais City. After the war he settled in and married a local. Master Jabel was one of his first students. How did I know that? My classmate in Silliman University married the Colonel's granddaughter or his daughter (not sure). I remember the road you're telling me - I think that road still exists. Getting back on the name Eskritedo - probably it means Eskrima and Karatedo. Master Jabel must have created a unique system by combining Okinawan style of Karate and Eskrima. As far as I can remember (hopefully my brain will not play on me) he teaches his students at the town plaza 2 forms of stepping - one I remember a longer front stance (common to Karatedo) and when he uses sticks it's closed quarter and switching them to something like a Balintawak side stepping. Did I get it right? One thing I would like to know though is, where and how did he get the Eskrima training. If I had the chance to study his styles I would but my academic studies was my priority that time. Thanks for the reply and a bit of nostalgia there. Yes, and I was one of the few lucky ones to study Eskritedo. I remember a picture on the wall with the great teacher (Japanese) chopping a bulls horn from its head, of course now you cant do that because of animal cruelty rights, but way back then in the 60's was a little bit different. Two years ago I contacted Mr. Orlando about using a quote from his excellent book, "Martial Arts America" for a book I am writing on Pencak Silat, and martial arts in general. Bob graciously replied to me immediately with permission to use the quote, just let him know how it would be used in the final draft. He did this without knowing who I was, or what I was about. He had never met me (still hasn't, for that matter), but allowed this anyway, and his manner with me was always pleasant and respectful. Not that he had to take that position with me, but did so out of courtesy, something I rarely see in martial arts these days. I realize that certian people and instructors take issue with him for things he says or believes, his books certianly speak the words no one else wants to approach. In my school, they are required reading. That being aside, I can attest (as can others, I'm sure) to Marc's comment about Bob being a "gentleman". It really is the right word to describe him.
