With Tiel it was probably the Thai boxing, not the FMA. The doctor told her to stop the Muay Thai and never, ever take it up again. She listened to him. She's also very nearsighted which he said contributed. When they repaired the tear they tacked it down in a couple other places and later did the same for the other eye just to be on the safe side. A hobby's a hobby. When you start risking greater damage in training than you're likely to face in real life it's time to reconsider the hobby. In her case we had to wait a couple weeks so that insurance would cover it. The doctor said (danke Gott) that it wouldn't be a problem. But yes, living near to modern medical care can be a great comfort. I'm kind of tethered to it myself these days. Hairy-chested fantasies of living out in the wilderness will need to wait for another lifetime. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Sammy Railroad" To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] looking for Eskrima school in the SF Bay Area Date: Thu, 7 Oct 2004 08:54:51 -0500 Organization: Audio Construction Inc. What I had always assumed were little hairs or maybe a bit of dirt, that I could see when I look around are actually little bits of my left retina that have fallen off. This is not the same kind of retinal detachment that you get from being punched. After seeing a consultant who said "Don't worry, go home come back in a month.....but if you ever wake up in the morning and you can't see, or there is a large dark area in your vision go straight to A&E (ER)!" I pureued the matter and was told that the more short sighted you are the higher the risk of your eyes basically pulling themselves to pieces (because the muscles pull too hard the eye is under more pressure) and little bits of the retina fall off. The problem is worse in people of a fair complexion (generally less pigment tissue to fall off). When boxers detach the retina it tends to be one big piece all at once. The advice I was given was: have regular eye exams and a balanced diet. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net How do you know you are Knife and Sword Fighting in the desert of California? When everything truly smells and tastes like dust! All kidding aside, the beautiful mountain and desert terrain created a great venue for the Cold Steel Challenge. As we arrived Saturday morning and went through check in, the biggest question was how many competitors were signed up to do the combative section of the tournament. Saturday would end up bringing 39 competitors and Sunday was near the same! Groups from all over traveled in to participate and cheer on the fighters. There were competitors from all over the California area including members from Bahalana, Oakland Eskrima, Lameco Eskrima and even competiors from Illinois, Pennsylvania, Germany and Texas. All in all everyone was there to show their style and see how far they would go in this competition. Outside of the combative sections, there were throwing competitions that to be honest, just rocked! Throwing knives, darts, shovels and even tomahawks was just a blast. It truly was a great experience for everyone. Lynn Thompson and Cold Steel showered the fighters with prizes and tons of hospitality. I would highly recommend everyone try to make it out to the next Cold Steel Challenge. It took me quite sometime to do it, and I still couldn't do most of the time. I got a lot of good laughs in the process. Thanks for the challenge! Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >From my experience, I'd have to say a good amount of it could be stemming from the media. For the most part, when we mention other martial arts on this forum, the names are pretty much common terminology. However, when it came to people mentioning how their art was this great and superior to others, it was almost in sync with what art was feautred in a recent action movie and/or featured in Black Belt Magazine. I know that when Steven Segal came out with his initial string of movies, all I heard left and right was Aikido this or Aikido that. Not to take away from that art, but people spoke of it like it was the be-all and end-all of martial arts. Ironically, some of my friends went to Aikido schools looking to learn the sinawalli patterns from the movie... lol. In regards to the media's role, I know Krav Maga was suddenly a big thing when Jennifer Lopez came out with Enough. I concur that a good deal also comes from people fairly new to martial arts who've been given the impression that their style is superior to all others. I will go on record as saying that I've met teachers who have downplayed other arts, and maybe two or three who support trying out other arts. Maybe it's a business thing... ugh. So where does this negative concept of other martial arts originate? Instructors? Fellow martial artists? Black Belt Magazine? :-) Most of what I've seen is from fairly new (less than 5 years in the arts) martial artists, and it seems most of them get the impression from their instructor that their art is superior to all others... __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Most of the schools already mentioned are not really in the Daly City, South City, San Francisco or San Bruno areas of the Bay Area. There are good schools in the south bay and east bay. Probably some up near the city, but I just don't know of any personally. Doctor said don't worry about it. Still when I lay on my back on my son's trampoline and look at the sky I see lots of them floating back and forth in the directions my eyes go.
