He mentioned that in his knife class he had a what he called a"grasshopper." It's a term he used to describe a problematic student. As he explained it to us, I told him we call them "What If Monkeys" (a.k.a. WIMs). These are the guys who any instructor will recognize as the voice that pipes up from the crowd with such intelligent questions as "What if it doesn't work?" or "What if you can't run?" or any variation of "What if?". Thing is usually these guys have an agenda. It is an agenda, that they will often take from a seminar and use it to launch a smear campaign against you on the internet (after pirating whatever valuable information they can from you). If you're an instructor, you know what I am talking about: On how your stuff doesn't work, how you don't know what you're doing, how you don't know the "True Art" yada, yada, yada. In short all those kind of fun and jolly issues that accompany being a teacher, much less having a name in the biz. I just finished up a Web page on the care and feeding of what if monkeys that y'all might find interesting. It's big, it's long, it's psychological, but it should give you some tips on how to shut the little gits down http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/WIMS.htm Marc Animal MacYoung --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Victor" To: Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 09:37:31 -0600 Subject: [Eskrima] head trauma - message 6 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I don't think so, although blows to the head certainly open the possibility lesions which could lead Parkinson- or palsy-like complications. Brain tumors, aneurysms, and stroke are more likely due to improper diet, exercise, congenital defects, and/or environmental contaminants than the practice of martial arts. The "old grandmasters" today don't seem to take care of themselves quite as well as the "old grandmasters" of the previous generation. This seems to be true across the board. Many have heart and circulatory problems, diabetes, and other conditions which could lead to stroke eventually. Regards, Jerry Davis. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Karen Pence" To: Date: Mon, 11 Oct 2004 10:48:32 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] FW: Day of Champions Kali Tournament -- Update Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey Everyone, Just wanted to give you a heads up on the early registration discount.
