Nyuk, nyuk, ;-) Do they win a banana? Seriously though, if they have a million "what ifs" to every situation, tell them to get a sparring partner and explore all those "what if" situations. Instructors, or any teachers for that matter, are there to present information. To explore the details of possibilities may be part of learning, but is the student's responsibility to do so on their own. Eventually they will learn to what nested level of analysis they should stop. Ussually its the third or second, and if they continue to ask rather than exploring on their own despite learning this they probably have obsessive-compulsive disorder, Once one gets past countering the counter, the number of combinations becomes exponentially immense and is futile to overanalyze all possibilities. In the first 10 moves of chess there are over a billion combinations of moves. No one memorizes or can analyze them all. They just use the basic, effective moves they know and use sensitivity to the situation to determine their next move or two on the fly... I see a parallel in the martial arts...eh? ________________________________________________________________ Speed up your surfing with Juno SpeedBand. Now includes pop-up blocker! In Fencing a large portion of our teaching is through the one-on-one private lesson given on the Maestro's plastron (protective over jacket). These Individual Lessons are not simply taking group type instruction and giving it to one person. The Individual Lesson in fencing is designed to allow the instructor to develop the technical reflexes and tactical abilities of his student by systematically creating opportunities for him to use various fencing techniques. It is almost a slice out of a miniature restricted bout. The Maestro sets up the problems and rewards a correctly executed technique or tactic by allowing a touch on his plastron. He punishes an incorrectly performed one by parrying it and riposting (counter attacking) on his opponent. And so the system of rewards and punishments in the lesson is similar to what he will experience in a bout. There are many different types of private lessons given this way; the Technical Lesson, the Tactical Lesson, the Bout Lesson, the Warm Up Lesson (gets students warmed up on tournament day). However, there is also another type of lesson modern fencing coaches are taught to give. It's called the Feel Good Lesson. This lesson is used with students who are not really interested in going into depth in the art, or who are not disciplined or dedicated enough to really get good at the art, or who are as you call "What Ifers" or "Monkeys." (By the way, I think calling them "What Ifers" is a good bit more respectful than calling them "Monkeys." Especially since they are paying me for instruction and not the other way around. And in order to deserve to receive respect myself I must act and treat others with respect.) Anyway, their Individual lesson is a good bit milder than the others. In it we simply allow them to perform techniques which they are already good at, thus helping them "Feel Good" about themselves, which is all most of these type of students really want anyway. And so they keep coming back because they enjoy the experience. And more importantly the money they pay you keeps you in business so that you can spend more energy and time teaching those who truly are dedicated and disciplined to learn the art.
