Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I had great time reading Marc's post and even more so his web page. The people who ask the same question until they get the answer they want are very familiar and not just in MA. Also the bit about asking permission to tee off on somebody... I was a bit concerned, though: for the last 10 years I have been dilligently preparing myself for the 6'7" pissed-off Samoan as defined by Paul Vunak. Now I hear that there are vicious Paraguayan track and field teams out there as well! Will the horror never stop? Anyway, being a semi-WIM, here is my favorite question. Unlike a true WIM I do not think I know the answer, but have tried to experiment and field test with various volunteers to find it. It is the old "saving the face" puzzle and it goes like this: You are standing in a "medio" distance away from a person whom we assume to be right-handed. He throws a right punch at your face from the left lead. There is no opportunity to strike first yourself or run away. There is no warning and no time to put up a "fence". What is the best way to save your face? I am talking only about the initial defensive move which has to be b....y quick! Is it the "wedge"? Is it the two-handed cross body block of silat? Druing some recent trials I sudenly recalled the Wing-chun bong sao which I was taught many years ago. I was kind of surprised how well it compared with the others: it came up lightning quick, the structure was strong, the body twist gets one at least partially off line and the second hand is up to back up. Also the chin goes instinctively down rather than up as is unfortunately my bad habit from time to time. The technique seemed to lend itself to a variety of follow-ups including some silat take-downs. Now I don't know if I liked it because I stink at the others and this one was drilled into me several thousand times *at a contact distance* i.e. if you did not get it up the other guy tagged you. Perhaps because of that I never considered it as a method to save one's face. I also wonder if it is a function of body habitus: I have short arms and the cross-body blocks do not seem to reach as they should. The bong sao seems created for people with the built of front-row forwards (actually, a true front row forward will not worry about blocking and just lets the other guy injure his fist on his head, but that is another story!). Is anyone out there who has done a comparison and can share the results? He does a live broadcast show up in the Tacoma area that gets streamed out over the internet. It's called On the Edge. The show airs Saturday morning at 10 am PST. I'm up tomarrow morning http://www.kellyworden.com/home/main.html So if you think I ramble on my posts, you should hear how I do it over internet radio. I talked extensively about the realities of knife work and the problems that come from it. As well as some of the other programs that we do. I did an interview with Kelly and Robert in September and it was very enjoyable. Their show is a lot of fun and always interesting.
