There's footage? Where can it be seen? By the way, a question about Sayoc Kali, on the other hand you say it's "All blade, all the time", but if understand it correctly, you do train with stick as well... Confusing. How do you explain this? Thanks! - Marko --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Wed, 20 Oct 2004 06:11:53 -0700 (PDT) From: jason couture To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] US combat team Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I just read a great story about a "US combat team" that took a visit to China. Sounds fun. Who wouldn't want to be greeted by women with flowers? I'm afraid being on a real "US combat team" is quite different. More often than not, the locals hate your guts! Can't blame 'em....after all, your there to take lives (if you have to). It also means that your getting shot at or blown up. I know I have never met or been apart of any martial arts org. that had these types of threats to body and mind. This is what the word "combat" means to me. I realize that the word "combat" sounds cool when used in a school name. It's got a hard core sound to it. But, "combat" is dirty, scary, destructive and political! Look how popular "combat" is these days on the news. I know I'm busting this guys balls over a stupid word like "combat" but, in the martial arts world people love to pick apart every thing you claim to be, right? So, this should feel right at home! I love the martial arts. I've been a student for many, many years but, it's not "combat" it's civilized SELF DEFENSE! The truth is, that's all it needs to be. ===== **JASON COUTURE** _______________________________ Do you Yahoo!? The phrase, "...we just call it training." referred to the FMAs community in general. Many of the older Sayoc instructors felt that they never had footage of their own closed door training from the old days. There's a lack of footage from no armor FMA stick fights, outside of the excellent Dog Brothers tapes. Several misconceptions that we knew to be true from this type of activity are dispelled. Good and Bad. In these days of high quality digital cameras there's finally an opportunity to get footage for the record. I'm sure we have all wished footage of the old days existed, as I know I do!! B) I didn't pick the phrase "US Combat Team" (I'm not sure who did, but that's how we were referred to). Consequently, my balls, personally, don't feel "busted" ;-) The CMA community there were interested in seeing application of martial arts, not just forms. None of us who were there could have touched any of the CMAists when it came to forms. They were incredible. But they had little to no understanding of how to apply what was in their forms. So, they were interested in seeing martial artists who *do* understand and can show "combative" applications for the movements. Like I said, I didn't pick the name. In fact, the organizer of the trip only had 3 weeks notice. My instructor and I only had 2 weeks notice. On September 14, I got home from a long weekend trip. My instructor called and said, "Do you have a valid passport?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Good. We're going to China." I said, "When?" He said, "We leave on September 27." And the whole trip was kind of lilke that - hurry up and wait - and it was all outside the control of pretty much everyone from the US. While, overall, it was an incredible trip - and who could turn down and all-expenses-paid trip? - we were pretty much herded around like a bunch of sheep about 80% of the time we were there. And when we weren't herded, we were watched pretty closely. Anyway, if I find out who picked the name, "US Combat Team" I'll be sure to pass on your "ball busting" :-) Mike ----- Original Message ----- From: "jason couture" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 20, 2004 9:11 AM Subject: [Eskrima] US combat team > I just read a great story about a "US combat team" > that took a visit to China.
