I can understand your dilemma with the leverage on the angle 3 cross block; however, I have a feeling that your approach may be the problem. Remember that the counters are simply a structure from which you can begin to adapt to other circumstances. If you are finding that you are having difficulties with this technique, you should thoroughly examine your movements, body positioning, timing, distance, etc. Assuming that you are in proper position and have timed the delivery correctly, the cross block for angle three can be quite an advantageous counter. The first thing that I would look at, based on your comments, is your left hand authority in the block itself. Your left hand and right foot should both act simultaneously, with your foot closing the male (closed) triangle, and your left hand stopping the forward motion of the feeder's striking hand. If you are not stopping his momentum and taking the sting out of his strike with your left, then it very well may crash through the block. Proper body positioning will allow you to generate quite a solid left hand authority for smothering a hard strike. This does require a good deal of training at the early stages, as defending the inside line is no walk in the park if you don't have 100% confidence in your ability to stand that ground. A useful drill that we have used in the past is to have the feeder deliver angle one and angle three alternately. The receiver assumes the closed stance position and simply rotates his block from high inside for angle one, down to low cross block for angle three. Start out with a slow, soft, and paced delivery and gradually turn up the heat. Do this for about 20-30 second intervals, and after the 3rd or 4th set, you should be able to reach full strength delivery. Remember not to necessarily be too sticky with the blocks - your hands are crossed and in one low position - great for trapping. Also pay close attention to the feeder's left hand, as it's always a nice tactic to feed a wide open angle 1 or 3 to set up a quick stab with the left while both your hands are busy blocking the other. One last thing to consider on the angle 3 - if the cross is being crashed through despite all your efforts, shouldn't you try to shift and pass to the outside? Let me know how it works out for you. It's apparent to me that because of this difficulty that eskrima favors the shorter people. For those taller eskrimadors, how do you cope with it? What do you do?
