In largo mano there is no height advantage. I simply keep my back straight and bend my knees to about parrallel-with-the-ground level. Remember the keep the right elbow bent and tucked into the body (for righties that is; I'm a lefty, and it's reversed for me), and the same with the left (alive) hand. This allows the body to lend support to the blocking arm. Also, keep the head up to avoid the chin getting tagged with a follow-up uppercut, a favorite tactic of most Serrada people I know. The way that you step into the strike is most important, though. Be sure you are facing the strike when you move in, intercepting the strike. A common mistake here is for the defender to lead too much with the shoulder, which turns the body too far inward and places your head right in the line of fire, and brings you in too close to the dagger hand. Another reason I like Serrada so much is that it works very well for me despite my having a handicap. I'm not as fast on my feet as I used to be, but with Serrada, which emphasizes intercepting strikes before they can build momentum, I can move into position and pretty much control the action from there. We use foot replacement with the male and female triangles once we're inside, so I can move from this vantage point very easily. The sensitivity that Serrada develops, plus the fighting spirit brought out in drills like lock and block, makes the art just as effective for me at this stage of the game as when I was younger and in better health. PS...I'm now teaching a class in Muncie, Indiana every other week, and will be starting a class here in Fort Wayne, Indiana beginning around the first of the month. Anyone in the area that would like to drop in and train, share, whatever will be more than welcome. Just drop me a line, and we'll get together.
