When i fight men i tend to like them the bigger because it gives me the advantage because i am smaller and quicker. It also gives me what i need training wise for what i teach to women, because the majority of women will face someone larger, stronger and filled with the intent of making them the prey on the streets. Like Steve says its the intent that matters more then the size, being smaller gives you more speed and agility then the big buff dude. So when i am fighting a large guy the game plan is normally in and out and run them ragged letting them try to get a hit in on me then when they are tired out, its time to come in with strikes. Doesn't matter what art i am working, its basically the same thing, intent, speed, and striking power. Last year i had a dude that was 6 foot 4 350 lbs pissed off bad at me, he kept coming at me full contact in a JKD-FMA class, he was mad as hell because he could not touch me and because i was in a class i would not take him down and cause problems, so i ran him around till he just about passed out. Ego kills, his will get him killed and he actually complained to the teacher after class that i was going to fast and he could not get a hit in on me, and he was actually quite belligerent about it all. I believe the teacher just smiled at him, hahah. All i did though was i used the tools that were available to me against him, his size, his ego, and my intent. As far as his intent, well once he got pissed off and his ego got the best of him, he had no intent and i was able to use that as well against him. This is the same thing i do fighting, full contact, sparring, or protecting life. Personally i believe, Nothing should ever be looked at as a disadvantage, when you have the intent to turn everything you face into a positive for you then there is no disadvantage. Again though that brings us back to intent. what's your intent, and what will you make out of the so called disadvantages, will you use them for you best interest and as a tool? or will you let them hold you back and change your intent into fear or failure? Subject: [Eskrima] History Channel- Practical to Tactical Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Several months back I took part in some filming for the Tactical to Practical program. The request was for Knife/Machete tactics and training maneuvers, the producer controlled most of the session with specific camera angles, engagement limitations, and brief interview questions. I was assisted by a team of Military Operatives from the program I instruct with the Special Forces. The proposed segment regarding physical training is about 10 minutes or so after editing. I have not previewed the program but check it out if it interests you, or you have time... Respectfully, Kelly S. An examination of how both U.S. Armed Forces and civilian counterparts constantly train to be ready for battle or disaster by staging huge exercises to keep skills sharp. From contained live-fire operations to huge, multi-national events, these methods prove effective for getting it right in combat or during disaster or acts of terrorism. Next, we see how deceiving the enemy for tactical advantage has a long history dating back to at least the Trojan Horse. And with consumer software like Photoshop, almost anyone can alter photographs in order to deceive. Finally, we examine the tactical pedigree of edged weapons. From samurai swords to the Bowie knife, blades make history happen; we look at some of history's most significant edged weapons and new blades that are sharpening the edge yet again! It was hosted by Ewen Campbell at the 'Rough and Ready' Gym. Both mornings it featured Sifu Mark Mcfann teaching Harimau/Silat takedowns and groundwork. Rather than showing an enormous breadth of knowledge which I'm sure he has, we just explored a few variations from one or two entries. I felt that with this approach I gained real depth in an area that was not too familiar to me, and found it to be very useful. I can't wait to get back to the gym to test it out, but three of my toes have turned black and I KNOW someone will step on them to trap me :-) If anyone gets the chance to train with Sifu Mark I thoroughly recommend it - great quality of teaching and a great guy. In the afternoons we all had the honour of Muay Thai training with Ajarn Surachai Sirisute (Ajarn Chai) from Guro Inosanto's Academy. Again more depth rather than breadth, and again all the more useful for just that reason. My elbows and right knees will be all the better forevermore. After the Sunday session we all watched Jay Gilbey and list member Pat Davies take their Muay Thai Grade 3 Instructor Test test under Ajarn. Mental. They had Ewen and Sifu Mark holding for them and it looked soooo gruelling. Ouch. Congratulations to both for a REAL achievement. Thanks to Ewen for hosting, putting us up for the night, and buying us all breakfast. Thanks to Pat for introducing me to all of the above (and congratulations again) and if anyone gets the chance to train with any of the above I CAN'T RECOMMEND THEM ENOUGH. Peace and respect to all on the list Julian _________________________________________________________________ It's fast, it's easy and it's free.
