With all the talk about various tournaments, I would like to point out that at the Sayoc Kali Sama Sama close to 80 + participants fought using the Atienza Blade simulator rules. Many awesome matches!! As well the recent no armor matches were held in Penns, again many more great matches! You can check some of the highlights on the Sayoc Kali website, as well as on the new DVD's. Question for everyone, when and where are the newest upcoming Stick fighting events happening? Still, looking at it in context I think it would have been nice and would have been appropriate to give us some props on it. I confess that perhaps I am a bit touchy at the moment because it comes on the heel of Cold Steel using fotos of our event to promote theirs. As everyone who reads our invitation or attends our event knows, we give permission for private foto taking, but not for commercial use. My various emails on this to Cold Steel went unanswered as the use of fotos continued. This promises to be a particularly large DB Gathering. We already have three confirmed fighters from Italy, with fighters from other countries making serious efforts to come as well. As will be discussed further below, we have at least three women fighters scheduled as well. On behalf of the Council of Elders of the Dog Brothers, Dog Brothers Inc. Martial Arts hereby cordially invites you to its "Dog Brothers Winter Gathering of the Pack" at 11:00 AM on Sunday, November 21, 2004 at the RAW Gym in El Segundo to conclude when the fighters are done. First the small print: Many of you may remember our Gatherings held in the park in Hermosa Beach, which, although they were hosted at considerable expense, were always free to you our friends, our guests. However with a private facility involved we now need to charge admission of $10. We ask that you still consider yourselves to be our friends and our guests. In this context we ask that you respect our wishes in the matter of Video. It is very simple: NO VIDEO CAMERAS, NO DUAL PURPOSE CAMERAS (i.e. with both still photo and video capabilities). THIS MATTER IS OF IMPORTANCE TO US! And, if you see someone videoing, please don't let them abuse our hospitality-please let us know. As always, you may take photographs for personal, non-commercial use PROVIDED you give us a complete set of the ones you take. Thanks to the increasing numbers of you who actually remember and bother to do this! It is very much appreciated! Now, what we come for: The Magic Words: The MAGIC WORDS: "No judges, no referees, no trophies. One rule only: Be friends at the end of the day. This means our goal is that no one spends the night in the hospital. Our goal is that everyone leaves with the IQ with which they came. No suing no one for no reason for nothing no how no way! Real Contact Stickfighting is Dangerous and only you are responsible for you. Protect yourself at all times. All copyright belongs to Dog Brothers Inc. CA law applies." This matter of accepting the risk applies to those of you in the crowd too. For example, sticks, and fights for that matter, may go flying into the crowd. Parents should consider things like this in deciding whether a child is old enough to bring along and/or deciding on from where to observe the event. For example, sitting on the heavy bags ringing the fighting area is a really risky idea for a child (or adult for that matter). If a stick or a fight comes careening your way-get out of the way! Each Gathering is different. One recurring question over the years has been about women doing this. Given the small number of women interested, there has been a circular quality to getting this started-- There's no women because there's no women. As I write it appears that we may now have traction. There are three women coming to fight (one all the way from Italy!) which will allow each of them more than one fight. Any additional women considering this may wish to check out http://dogbrothers.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=26 At this Gathering, for the third time we will continue our 2 against 2 (or 3 against 3 or 2 against 3?) knife fighting explorations. There was a dramatic improvement in tactics between the second time and the first. No doubt the progress will continue. Remember that you may fight with weapons other than a stick if you can find someone willing to go against you. Please consider stick and knife (aluminum blades OK with us) fights, staff fights, and anything else. In order to more deeply explore certain variables, fighters may agree to "no grappling" rules. In staff fights, the fighters may wear wrestling type ear guards under the fencing masks. There is no charge for fighters but FIGHTERS MUST PRE-REGISTER, even if they have fought before. The Fighter's Registration form can be found on the website. If you are a member of the Dog Brothers tribe an email or phone call will suffice. For all Fighter Registration matters, please contact Cindy at Prettykitty@dogbrothers.com 310-540-6853. You are not pre-registered until your name appears on the list of registered fighters on the website!!! If you have fought before and show up without having pre-registered there will be a $20 fee AND you will have to grovel with our Veep in Charge of Reality Cindy a.k.a. "Pretty Kitty". We (especially Cindy!) REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don't like having to deal with this on such a busy day so please do both you and us a favor and pre-register. If you haven't fought before and you show up without having pre-registered, you will not be allowed to fight. This will be ruthlessly enforced! One of the points raised by us gun nuts was that if guns were outlawed, then violent criminas would go to knives and other weapons. One of the concerns raised by us gun nuts was that of the slippery slope. Any comments on the following article is from the Scottish paper, the "Evening Times" (http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/hi/news/5032285.html) ? "Assault knives"? "Random stop and search"? Woof, Crafty Dog ========================= New laws aim to ban shops from selling knives NEW laws banning high street shops from selling assault knives, machetes and other weapons could be introduced by the end of next year. Sales of replica guns will also be banned because they can be converted into useable firearms. First Minister Jack McConnell has been in talks with chief constables on how to combat the rising level of knife crime, which is at its highest level for 10 years. There will also be tougher sentencing powers for knife assaults, and a proposal to give police random stop and search powers is being considered. The age at which young people can buy household knives and axes may also rise from 16 to 18. A commitment to review the law and enforcement on knife crimes was part of the Executive's Partnership Agreement. An Executive spokesperson said: "We are looking at existing legislation to determine whether it is sufficiently robust and flexible to respond to the illegal use and carriage of knives. "Related to that work, we also plan to consult on proposals to increase the powers of our record number of police officers to deal with knife and violent crime." Details of the new proposals are expected to be revealed in a parliamentary Bill early next year. Over the past four years the number of incidents involving knives has risen by 350%, and in Glasgow alone 7500 people were victims of knife crime last year. Under current legislation, councils can ban market traders from selling non-household knives but have no power to prevent their sale in high street shops. The Evening Times was praised in the Scottish Parliament for campaigning for a crackdown on knife attacks and violence on the streets. Glasgow's growing problem was highlighted in the Scottish Parliament by Shettleston MSP Frank McAveety after four men were killed in his constituency in a weekend of violence last month. During First Minister's Questions he produced photographs of makeshift weapons, including scissor blades taped to a broom handle, to demonstrate the extent of the problem. Mr McConnell said then that ministers were looking at strengthening laws on the sale and carrying of knives, increasing police powers and strengthening sentences as soon as possible. Among the shops affected by the new law would be Victor Morris whose owner Martin Morris describes his stock as "sporting and collectable" items. He said the new measures would be pointless and that most knife crime involved kitchen knives. Mr McAveety said today: "The quicker we strengthen the law the better. Many attacks are carried out using domestic knives but a belt and braces approach with rigorous controls over shops which sell dangerous weapons is needed." --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Mon, 15 Nov 2004 08:04:42 -0800 (PST) From: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Brown belts To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net You have a point but my point was the "intent" on what I teach and the way I teach. A foundation is absolutely required if you are to advance in any art. Having said that, I'll never believe any art is so sacred that you cant experiment with it. You should learn techniques that have a history of success, but you should also know that its quite possible that there are techniques out there that may work even better. Even though I'm no where near having my own system, I'd like to believe that its entirely within the realm of possibility. I don't recall the gentleman's name, but an old master level escrima practitioner once said: "new ideas will either confirm or disprove old ideas". I think that quote says it all. Respectfully, Steve Kohn Ray Terry wrote: > Researchers on the other hand are more likely to advance an art by > investigating new variations on old, universal concepts. If and only if the researcher invests the requisite years necessary to obtain a firm grounding in the first place. All too often we see people that spent a year here and a year there, can't fight worth a lick, but still feel they should be creating something new instead of learning something that works.
