The guys at the gym reception that I mentioned, never seemed to know what it is. :-) I'm glad that your art had been very accessible to everyone. First, do this when you have up to a couple of hours that you can spend Second, get a cup of coffee Third, go to www.nononsenseselfdefense.com and start reading. Fourth, even if you don't agree...which a lot of people don't...then at least think about the points made and come up with your own demonstrable and verifiable conclusions and answers. Flat out, when it comes to personal safety, safety of your family, self-defense and crime prevention your "fighting prowess" is less than 5% of the equation. If you choose to ignore the other 95% of the issues involved you're setting yourself up to get your brains blow into a fine pink mist if and when you find yourself in a live-fire situation. The martial arts are NOT self-defense training. Can they be used for that purpose? Sometimes. Then again I can also use a wrench as a hammer if I need to. Is that the most effective use for that tool? Not only no, but hell no. You don't need the excuse of "self-defense" to study the arts. The main reason that I say this is that it is a red herring one that tends to lead people off into fantasy-land about violence. If you are concerned about crime and violence then you study the problem of crime and violence -- from people who's job it is to deal with it. They can and will tell you the complications and problems of the subject because they know the different levels. Complications and problems that can -- and will -- get you killed or thrown in prison if you encounter something worse than a quarrelsome drunk in a bar. And on that point, trust me when I say there is far worse out there than an obnoxious drunk. Study of the arts for the sheer enjoyment, exercise and camaraderie the hobby provides is good enough reason alone. You want more reason? Okay, the countless and myriad benefits that one gains from the study of the arts are beneficial in everyday life. (Man, as a street brawler I used to laugh at the tenants of Tae Kwon Do, now I look at them and say "yeah, those are critical for kids to learn because they are life skills"). These are reasons and benefits enough. You don't need the excuse that you are training for self-defense to justify what you are doing, because like I said "fighting prowess is less than 5%" and all that stuff that you learn in the MA doesn't apply in an SD situation. This article is also interesting in that data have been gathered to demonstrate that the incidence of left-handedness varies in populations. In the past, many sources cited a 5-11% incidence of left-handedness, with 10% being the most popular figure, according to my memory. This study lists populations with a low of 3% and a high of 27%. Wow. However, I'm not convinced by the causation of the left-handedness by levels of violence. One could just as easily equate violence, including reproductive violence, with left-handedness. That is, if left-handers are innately more violent and the circumstances exist for large scale violence, there will be more breeding performed by left-handers. This is my hypothetical counter to the conclusion of the article above, not my personal opinion about left-handedness. --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 8 Dec 2004 18:09:19 -0800 (PST) From: Genfil Villahermosa Subject: [Eskrima] dekiti tirsia sarradas To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Your correct in saying that Dekiti means close. It is an ilongo word which closely related to the Tagalog word Dekit which means "close" or "stick or attached". On the other hand Pekiti does not mean close. In ilongo it means "to close your eyes" What I see in the change in approach you metion is mixing FMA with other martial arts like Silat so I could not consider it as a pure Filipino Art.
