I do feel that all of the arts become more effective as they blend together. But I also feel that it is good to at least always remain aware of the origin of the different techniques and terminologies. What are your feelings on this? ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com --__--__-- Message: 5 From: "Steve Ames" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] SinawaliTrade.com Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2004 11:44:53 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I got some of the $2.50 rattan from them back in June. Other than the only electronic payment they accept (at the time?) was ikobo.com (had to create an account for myself there. ick).. no problems at all. Not the prettiest sticks but they were cheap and are holding up OK to light practice. Some of the protective gear also had good pricing but I didn't want to risk too many dollars my first time out with them. Shipping is from the Phillipines so may be a little steep (I don't remember). -Steve ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2004 1:01 AM Subject: [Eskrima] SinawaliTrade.com > Has anyone had any experience with SinawaliTrade.com? Please go to www.EMAA.us to learn more details. The primary teacher will be Bambang Suwanda (the younger brother of the late Herman Suwanda), although we will bring in guest instructors as time & scheduling permits. I have had dealings with siniwali trade in the past and have been very happy with the service and the majority of the products. The sticks were no where near strong enough and didn't even last one session. I would recommend trying out a small order of the products at first. Bare in mind the prices of shipping are VERY high. I hope you get on well with them. Just a quick hello to everyone on the list and thanks for all the information that I have been lucky enough to view over the last 9 months. I look forward to posting more often. You want more reason? Okay, the countless and myriad benefits that one gains from the study of the arts are beneficial in everyday life. (Man, as a street brawler I used to laugh at the tenants of Tae Kwon Do, now I look at them and say "yeah, those are critical for kids to learn because they are life skills"). These are reasons and benefits enough. Boy, talk about "damning with faint praise". I took a look at your web site and it is a good job of salesmanship, but when it comes down to the bottom line I don't see how you are any different than the "SCARS" guys. You seem to be saying the everyone else is no good and the only safe thing to do is learn from you. Sorry, I don't buy it. I ran across this article talking about the same subject from a link I got from this list, it gives a refreshing look to old self defense against martial arts argument. http://tracelesswarrior.blogspot.com/2004/12/martial-arts-and-self-defense.h tml I have read a couple of your books, and while they were quite informative about what a bad-ass you are, there was nothing there that can't be found in other places without all the ego fluff and put downs of everyone who isn't a follower of you. I really appreciate your insightful comments and suggestions. As a follow-up to a message from Ray Terry, I am located in California and I have some firearms training from the USMC. It's just that I'm getting older and I seem to be losing some of the self confidence that I had when I was younger, and that has made me begin to consider alternative strategies etc. Marc MacYoung stated: "You don't need the excuse that you are training for self-defense to justify what you are doing, because like I said "fighting prowess is less than 5%" and all that stuff that you learn in the MA doesn't apply in an SD situation." In response, I guess I am, in part, trying to justify the time and energy I spend on FMA and related activities. And now that you mention it, I suppose I do really enjoy the camaraderie and good old physical activity enough to keep doing it for those reasons alone. I appreciate your helping me to see that. On the other hand, I am wondering how well the FMA satisfy the "fighting prowess" problem if I somehow find myself in an otherwise unavoidable violent situation. I have had the opportunity to experience a few styles of FMA from recent seminars in Northern California, and there appear to be relevant differences in how the knowledge is presented. What should I look for in FMA instruction in order to prepare for the worst, and to cover the 5% that you mentioned? Thanks in advance! Dan __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? This was a long time ago. Funny thing that at the time I found it not to be worth much to me. I was already an instructor and didn't see anything in it that was of any substantial benefit to me. But now as I look at it again, I find it interesting that looking at the book (written in the 60's) it is like a time warp into the past where I can look at how things were examined and taught in that time period. I would be interested in more such books. Can anyone recommend some older books of that type?
