Thanks for the info! It's great to know theres others around! Problem is, most of them belong to schools, and that means I have to pay! I am poor. :( but Im in school at Foothill. But the thing is I really get kinda bored I guess because I'm usually practicing alone except when I go for lessons. I just want to train with somebody who knows how to swing a stick! My wife is deathly afraid of getting hit on the knuckles (again *snickers*) so I am forced to play-fighting with my 4-year old since I pumped him full of Ninja Turtle power... I push the one with the Largo stick on him, but not too hard. I actually am prepping him to take Silat lessons (Manyang) in M. View as soon as I can either afford it or he is accepted. Anyway, my uncle is Ray Subega if you have heard of him. So anybody in the Santa Clara area wants a training partner outside of class, get at me. Esp if youre from my uncle Rays school. Of course we've heard of him! If you're at Foothill then you're not too far from Gints' group up in Redwood City. You might find some crazies up there to have fun with. Gints? Friendly group, informal, and free of course. We were meeting regularly, but it's a little more spotty now, and sometimes on days other than Friday. At the moment we're doing all knifework, though I don't think anyone is opposed to occasionally adding in some stick. Email me at heelh00k@yahoo.com (note those are zeroes in the word "h00k") if you're interested. Joe --- John Montes wrote: > Hey Ray! Thanks for the info! I knew there was more to it than meets the eye. I was out of town for a couple of days, so I am behind in my emails, and I reserve the right to comment later on some of these excellent posts, privately if I get too far behind. I saw Gat Puno's post, which reminded me. I have two new articles on http://www.worldblackbelt.com . One of them features Gat Puno Abon. Be sure to click on "Articles." Thanks. Those who condemn me often reveal flaws and weaknesses in my presentation that are overlooked by those who understand what I am trying to say. After the recent round of unpleasantness I went back and reviewed my presentation against some of the more credible charges made against me. Well damn Sam, if I didn't find parts that I had been unclear about. Points that as one person just told me "are pretty well implied in your writing" but were never clearly stated. Things like the definition of self-defense, the fact that the "martial arts" is very much a subculture or the fact that my critique of what goes on in the martial arts culture is not about the martial arts, but what is done under the guise of the martial arts. http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/martialarts.html http://www.nononsenseselfdefense.com/MAculture.html While those who don't want to, will never understand and those whose conduct matches the profiles I present will really not like what I have to say on these pages, I have rewritten them to clarify my points and definitions. One of the larger problems I have encountered when it comes to discussing self-defense is that "everyone know what something means until there is a problem" In otherwords, without careful definition of terms -- like self-defense -- and clearly stated motives -- like consumer awareness-- people can misinterpret what I am trying to get across. So to all the folks who contributed, thanks, you've helped me make my points clearer. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "I was fortunate to have a training partner who danced professionally for a while, of course he never told anyone and you would not know by looking at him. This made his motion when sparring, doing Karenza, and Kenbangan flow like nobodies business. Once I was able to figure this out and convince his sorry, ass to not hold back these attribute it totally changed my motion as well as my life in the arts. I started thinking of things in beats, quarter beats, half beats and tempo." I WAS gonna comment on this myself, but the ass-scratching ape has done a better job than I would have...! Actually, I wanted to say further on the subject of rhythm & meter, and the "Martial Motion" that the Ape brought up; I hear many upper-level American Silat practitioners speaking poorly of the Kembangan flower-dance of Indonesia, saying things like "I'm not interested in floor dancing". In my experience, the knowledge of this secret (and I truly think it is a secret) is crucial to a deeper understanding of your art. Kembangan (and the Filipino version as well) stress balance and co-ordination in FLUID MOTION, as opposed to the start-stop-start-stop broken timing that you find so frequently in most martial arts forms, the unchanging approach of "Set-Root-Punch". It's easy to take a step, pause to settle in your stance, and fire a punch off, then pause for another second. If you can find your balance without ever rooting your stance or focusing your technique in one end-all shot, you are brought MUCH closer to how things can flow in actual combat. Minus the pain, of course. Oh, I know, much more takes place in a real fight, there is no real knife defense, la la la. What I am speaking of here is the ability to RELAX and MOVE in a crisis situation, as opposed to tensing up and clamping down, thusly hindering your ability to respond fluidly. Kembangan promotes that. Practice using music & finding the rhythm promotes that. However, LEARNING to find rhythm is extremely hard and the best method I have found to date is dance class. At least, that's where I discovered it. I don't mean rhythm as a "Tap your toes to the beat" kind of thing, but a WHOLE BODY experience. You move, with or without a weapon, in synch with the music. If you don't understand this concept of rhythm use, it's easy to shrug it off and say "Such doesn't apply to me, I already know great things". A person who takes the banal & ordinary and illuminates it in a new way can terrify. We usually do not want or like having our ideas changed. We feel threatened by such demands. “I already know important things!” we say. But we also readily admit we are not the sun-source of knowledge. So it really comes down to what level of incompetence are you willing to settle for?
