I claimed in my previous post that my master defeated Guro Roger in a match. I realized that this was not true. In fact, my master was shocked that I even posted such claims. These two men were merely practicing, and are very good friends. In short, my master was participating in Guro Roger's class. The second master was just visiting, too, and watched the practice. It was all my fault. I wasn't even present during the practice. I made assumptions and conclusions of what really happened, and I took everything out of context uninentionally. I did not realized that I was insulting the members of Eskrima De Campo, Guro Roger, my own master and his friends, including my fellow students. I met Guro Roger just once, and he was very humble. Had I known who he was I would not have been so casual to him. I didn't realize until recently that Guro Roger was the same person I met not too long ago. My master is equally kind and generous. As for the second master, I have not spoken to him, nor does he even know who I am. The only association I know about the second master is that I saw him in a video expertly twirling sticks in very high speeds, he looked impressive, and I don't know much else. I apologize profusely to all three masters and to anyone else who read my message. It was an honest and terrible mistake on my part, and I take full responsibility for it. My previous post was not meant to be defamatory, especially to Guro Roger. I apologize to him and his students for my callousness, and for all the trouble I brought him. I apologize to my own master for my assumptions, including the second master for even mentioning his name. I would hope Guro Roger will not blame anyone else for my own mistake. My master did not approve my previous comments about his friend, Guro Roger, or Eskrima De Campo. It's no disgrace to lose as a warrior. The only disgrace is to have such talent and never use it! Just because you lose one match doesn't mean your fighting system is crap. Maybe, the other guy is in better physical shape than you. Maybe, you are already injured. Maybe, the sun was in your eyes. The key is to live and fight another day! Review your techniques, trim the fat and become a better fighter. It's all a learning process. We are all in this art to USE IT! If your not going to "play" with others or take part in challenges, get out and pack your sticks up in the shed. Don't even bother looking at them anymore. This is all said with the greatest respect ( of course! ) to all the warriors out there. ===== **JASON COUTURE** __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! OK. Here goes: KP Bong Jornales will be holding an introductory double stick seminar of his system, Arnis Sikaran Sandatahan on January 22, in Holland, MI from 1-4pm on January 22. Cost is $55 and includes a pair of rattan sticks($28 value). Kataas-taasang Puno Bong's double stick work is highly evolved and very fluid, yet powerful. His system is centered around double work rather than just including it. It is designed to be utilized at all ranges and all double stick techniques translate directly to empty hand as well as the vast array of Filipino weaponry (Sandatahan) we utilize. Arnis Sikaran Sandatahan is a stand alone system yet is also designed to complement other styles very well. KP Bong has refined the family system he learned as a youth in the PI over the past 30+years and after many years of intense competition has spent the last ten years traveling the world to promote and carry on his system. All ages, styles and ranks are welcome. Space is limited so preregistration is recommended. Contact him at 616.335.9074 or arnismaster@comcast.net or you can contact me with any questions or for directions. Hope to see you there!! It is exactly why in our "Tao of the Dog" we have "no judges, no referees, and no trophies" and in our videos we do not give fighters names or styles. In addition to business reasons, it is also why we control video at our event-- so that fighters can come to play knowing that their experience can focus on growth and not ego for self or for style. The only times certain individuals have been disinvited from further participation in Dog Brothers Gatherings has been because of violations of the "no bragging" rule. With regard to control of video, there was a matter a several years ago where a grappling-with-knives group had its top man defeated by a grappling group who had snuck a video camera into the event and promptly put the fight along with deprecatory comments on the web. In this forum all I will say is that feelings ran very hot before intercession succeeded in restoring calm. Concerning DeCampo: via my Lameco training with Punong Guro Edgar I was exposed to small pieces of the system and these pieces left me with the distinct impression that it is a very high quality system. Re cats and dogs, (an often used expression in Tagalog--"aso't pusa"), quite unfair to these animals. It is more human nature. Alas, too many people mistake rudeness and calumny for toughness and superiority (reference Marc Denny's post also). And on that note, here's to a gentler (more civil) yet tougher (training-wise) 2005 for all of us. Jay de Leon doug tucker wrote: Nothing has changed since the days of the Labangon Fencing club. It takes someone of extreme skill to impress us and Bob Orlando delivered in his 2-day seminar in Topeka, Kansas on December 18-19, 2004. Below are some areas I will discuss in detail. Innovation: I initially thought that his material will be old hat to us but not so! His innovative ideas took drill work to a new level. The self-defense applications sure beat the heck out of dissecting the corpse (preprogrammed self-defense sequences where the bad guy punches you and then stops moving so that you can do twenty things to him while he just stands there). The dynamic nature of his drills benefits both practitioners whereas many of our old drills make the feeder endure the boredom of simple repetitive motions while the other person reaps all the benefits. Teaching Method: The Indonesian Fighting Arts are very complex. However, Bob was highly organized and even provided students with handouts at various stages - 10 overall! Each topic he covered was a build-up of a previous topic. So when you did something on the second day, it was very familiar with a principle he covered on the first day. After the seminar, I had so much information overload that I was worried that I may not have retained very much but after reviewing the material a couple of days later I realized how the build-up of topics allowed my spouse/partner Sheryl and myself to recall lots of material. Toughness: You would never guess it but Bob is 60 years old. He is in better shape than many men half his age. Whereas most good seminar instructors are willing to grab anyone from the crowd, Mr. Orlando actually has participants hit him. "Hit harder, harder!" I'm glad some of my older students were able to train with him because after he left, they were asking for workout tips and I have always lectured about the need for physical fitness outside of class. Character: Let's face it, many seminar instructors carry a feeling of aloofness about them or are just pains in the asses. Not Bob! He's friendly and will also answer any question that you have. He’s willing to provide advice and is not patronizing in any way. He did not preach that his way is the best. Instead, he told our students to let their "instructors process the material and respect them if they decide that it doesn't fit into their system." He also had a great sense of humor. I've never heard so many Kansas jokes in my life! There was a time when he told a quick bible story to describe his respect for one of his friends but did it in such an un-proselytizing manner where students, even non-Christians, can appreciate his faith. (I often take a separation of Church and Dojo approach to politics and religious. Call me milquetoast!) Drawbacks: He's so organized that he'll probably be able to tell you exactly what he plans to be doing at any given time in the future. However, his structure can be a disadvantage. The desire to be back in Colorado by 8pm on Sunday makes scheduling a little hard as we had to condense most of the material on the first day and have 9am start times. Our preferred starting time for seminars is 10am so that folks traveling from long distances can commute. We may have lost a couple of out-of-towners but I admit that having Bob with a smaller group allowed him to spend more time with each participant. Every healthy person got their shots in with him. He did not cross hands with one person who was recovering from a cold because of concern for his wife's failing health. (I personally like that rule as I often lecture students about not spreading their illnesses during class.) Unlike some seminar presenters who rock and roll past midnight, Bob was very strict about his bedtime routine of early to bed and early to rise. Yeah, Sheryl and I may have missed out on some extra training time but then again, his structure is probably what helps him function so well and stay in great shape. Heck, I'm sure I could have gotten more tips and training if I woke up at 5 or 6 am but you know how it is taking turns with the wife helping to take care of an infant who doesn't sleep throughout the night (truth be told, I'm not a morning person). Follow-up: After the seminar, Bob sent a thank you note and also answered our email questions promptly. He'll also be mailing me a videotape of the seminar so that I can retain most of the information. Sorry, he made me promise that nobody else can have a copy. One way to see it is to bring over some beer and pizza (I prefer microbrews and no anchovies). The only way you can get your own copy of his seminars is to host one and I hope more folks near my neck of the woods decide to do this. Overall Analysis: Bob Orlando helped to energize our group by showing us a lot of great drills and principles. He made what are often considered obscure martial arts easy to learn and understand with his highly organized and logical teaching methods. We highly recommend that any martial artist looking to broaden their perspectives give the Indonesian Fighting Arts a good hard (and soft) look with one of his seminars. I highly recommend him! He definitely is one of the finest martial artists of our time.
