You will not regret it. I had black belts in 2 other arts before I started FMA training. And once I started it was like beginning all over again. Except, the FMA made all of my other martial arts better. You are in for a wonderful experience. I wish you the very best. Just reminded me of the post regarding folks acting irrationally when officers show up, this didn't sound like a normal occurence. It sounded kinda like either the guy wanted to die or was mentally unstable, or both. Santa Clara PD, although I've heard they aren't that great, from what I've seen firsthand they respond very quickly. Whoever is criticizing must not have lived on the east side of San Jose, CA, because it's like that song "911 is a joke"... Plus lots of corruption and bungles, mishaps, etc killing a woman armed with a veggie peeler? That happened in San Jose, and the woman was legally mentally disabled. It made me wonder if those men had been trained in fma, a simple disarm would've taken care of that. I swear, sometimes.... Knowing about SDS is important, what is even more important though is that Joe and Jane Civilian know about it for the reasons specified below. **************************** Couple o' things... First this is an excellent article. I've known about Sudden Death Syndrome (SDS) for a while now and it is one of those things that civilians just don't understand. A guy can be in such a pumped up/manic/adrenaline state that his body "just burns out" and you're left with a corpse, a shitload of paperwork and the media swooping down on you like State Treasurers on the tobacco settlement. What makes it all the worse is how often this burn out happens as the person is fighting the restraints. Commonly in such cases -- and you'd think it would be hard to do -- but the restraints enrage them more. (Which doesn't that just bring a whole new light to "submission" fighting?). Great, now you got a corpse in handcuffs and even though you were five feet away, everyone is looking at you. What bugs the shit out me is that many in the media know about SDS as well, but when you see incidents like this reported, it is very seldom mentioned. Like that 300 pound cranked out black guy who was throwing cops around like rag dolls a few years ago, they get him down, cuff him and he keeps on fighting...bzzzzzt...he croaks. The nice thing about that one was the PD immediately released the tape to the media -- who by playing it -- really assisted the PD's PR department. This article explains all kinds of things that people need to know. I don't intend to take sides, just to spur some interesting dialogue.
