Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 12:32:39 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I grew up in Metro Manila (greater metropolis composed of the big neighboring cities of Manila), in Makati City actually. I've always spelled/pronounced it as latigo, I've never heard of it pronounced as "latiko", though some provinces may pronounce it that way. My wife comes from the visayas and she pronounces it the same way as I do, not really a biggie. Funny enough I spelled kalesa the spanish way (c versus k) in my original email ;-) Yeah, the kalesas and karitelas have been largely replaced by their motoring breathrens, I remember growing up and seeing them every sunday in church but it is more difficult to find them nowadays. I'm pretty sure they are still quite prevalent in Binondo (China town) in old Manila so that might be a place your friend can try. Another thing, I noticed that in the Philippines, a lot of hard-to-find things are available in the native stores for tourists (Sulo or at the Silahis stores). Good luck... Myron -----Original Message----- From: rob mulligan [mailto:panguro3@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, January 13, 2005 12:05 PM To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] "latiko" "latigo" etc... Myron Wieneke suggested that "latiko" was actually spelled "latigo". The way I understand it, most Filipinos pronounce it and spell it with the "k", instead of the Spanish "g". PG Marinas is from Nueva Ecija, he says it and spells it like that, and my student Jose is from Pampanga and he does the same. I teach at a Philippine youth center, so i'll have to ask the language instructor there. I'm just an old white "'cano", so I can't swear to it firsthand. Whatever... When Jose went back last year he found that the calesa's were mostly replaced by taxi's and motor bike taxi's, that's why he had such a hard time finding new latiko's. (he did bring me back some real purty balisongs...uh-oh..."balisong", "balisung" etc... now that's whole 'nuther can of worms) Several people have suggested whip sources, like davidmorgan.com, but they have mostly American style horsewhips, not like those of the calesa drivers, which are rattan handled and stiff through about 2/3 to ¾ of their length with a very tight tapered wind and evenly spaced knots woven into the flexible end. They are immensely more controllable than American style whips; nearly as good as a stick. Those are the ones that Jose had difficulty finding. That's why he decided to teach himself how to make them. If anyone knows a good source for those latiko's, we would appreciate it, even if it's just to dissect them. Thanks... Well as it turns out he was not there , oh I was told he is in America teaching Chuck Norris . My last visit to Phills was in Sep 2004 , I was seeking out Essing Atillo of black eagle fame . HE was not available , oh I was told he is in America teaching Chuck Norris. This seems to be a recurring theme when looking for well known eskrimadors. And I concurr , the locals hardly ever know what arnis / escrima is . The national bookstore has no stock of arnis books and I had to get mine directly from Diony Canete , which was a blessing really because I got an insight to FMA straight from the GM himself for a couple of hours. Oh yeah , I reckon karaoke as a national pastime can rival even the basketball in popularity. :) Regards all --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Terry Subject: Re: [Eskrima] observations from Phills To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 09:57:29 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > My first trip to Phills was around 12 years ago , I had been impressed by > the BBC program way of the warrior and set of to visit Cacoy Canete at Doce > Paris . Cacoy usually lives here in San Jose, Calif from May through September doing seminars around the US, Europe and Mexico. Sometime in September he returns to Cebu. I realize that arnis/eskrima are not all that well known the the RP, but one funny story... before I had Cacoy Canete's home address in Cebu I wanted to send him a Christmas card. I addressed it to Cacoy Canete, Doce Pares Eskrima, Cebu City, Cebu. He received it! Ark. Cops Use Taser to Subdue Nude Jogger WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (AP) - Officers have finally arrested a man for making late-night runs in the nude along Airport Road in West Memphis. Fate Patterson, 39, of West Memphis was apprehended Monday night, West Memphis police said Wednesday. Officers had to use a taser to subdue Patterson, who had dodged police for six months or so. The jogger was arrested after he ran past a police car and failed to stop when he was ordered to do so by officers on location. After his capture, Patterson was charged with indecent exposure, fleeing and resisting arrest. ``You know, this one has just got me kind of speechless,'' said Mike Allen, assistant chief of the West Memphis police department. Allen said it wasn't known why the man was jogging while nude. " --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? I'm training with a friend now who is first generation Filipino. His background is in TKD and Kung-Fu, so I show him the FMA. Funny thing is someone will see us and ask us questions (we train at a college gym alot) guess who the address? The asian guy! lol His parents wanted him to be "American" so never let him train anything until he moved out and never taught him Tagalog. His parents only spoke it to each other. I find it sad this white guy, who's barely left Ohio is re-attaching someone to their roots. As a reciprocle I know a Western Martial Arts instructor and train with him when I can the fighting arts fom my home country (Scottland/Wales) Funny how things work. -Brian --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Povadora January 14, 2005 The world governing arnis body WEKAF (World Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation) and the Cebu City Sports Commission will host the 2006 World Championship Qualifying event dubbed as "Sinulog International Arnis Championships" today at the Elizabeth Mall starting at 12 noon. More than 100 eskrimadors from Korea, Japan, Switzerland and the USA will be participating in this event sponsored by eBusiness Services Inc. (the First Asia Pacific Network Agent for Western Union), Osaka Iridology, DMC Busa Printers, University of Cebu, Elizabeth Mall, Bantay Radyo, Nature's Spring Drinking Water, Cebu Television, Calmoseptine Ointment and Graphicstar. Gracing the affair are Cebu City Councilor Jack Jakosalem, eBusiness Services Inc. Cebu Branch head Jenny Vi Cortes, WEKAF chairman emeritus Dionisio Canete, Doce Pares, Balintawak and other arnis club grandmasters and masters. Up for grabs are 32 individual titles including 12 in the Open-Advance Division, 12 in Collegiate and six in the Secondary and Elementary Divisions. Philippine Navy fighters are highly favored in the Open Advance Division while University of San Carlos, University of the Visayas and University of Cebu are among the top picks in the Collegiate Division. Dumanjug National High School is expected to make its presence felt as it parades two Kawasan International Arnis champions - Louime Tano and Jade Fe Ruben -- in the Secondary Division. "We expect the favorites to dominate the championship but we also expect those who were very dedicated in their training since late last year to shine and even pull the rug from under the favorites," said WEKAF Director Percival "Val" Pableo, who's also a four-time World Champion. --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 15:09:50 -0600 (GMT-06:00) From: George Mason To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] FMA in the PI Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hey Brian, Similar story here. I have a friend that is Filipino. And he has little to no knowledge of his heritage. And I have been talking to him about FMA. I have offered to teach it to him. And he is very interested. Sad that he didn't learn it from his home roots. Martial Arts. Of course she goes to TKD 3 times a week but whenever she a vacant time, I'm with her giving a small amount of lessons. I never tried to compel her to learn FMA because kids at her age (8 years old) they like to go with friends they know and play. For the fist stage of her learning martial arts (TKD) that positive values and benefits of all she's learning is for her own good. A touch of history of the Philippines before we start practicing Eskrima. For healthier understanding. Then sending her to Martial Arts school to form her mind and convene new friends at her age level and practice at the same time with there own pace. As she went on, small lessons of FMA are brought in just to get her acquainted to the ART. Now, she is persuasive enough to learn more, she even asked me to set a time to practice Eskrima because she likes it. Once I asked her about what do you like about TKD and Eskrima, she told me - she love both arts because she can protect herself on different situations. I guess I did my part of introducing her to FMA. My suggestion would be little by little teaching her the values of your beloved art and she will eventually understand the why's and the if's. Just a thought. Respectfully, Clint p.s. your name is also my son's name. -- __--__-- Date: Thu, 13 Jan 2005 08:19:32 -0700 From: Jared Dame To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Observations from the Philippines Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I am at an impasse with how to go about the upbringing and martial training of my daughter. She has expressed interest in my fanatic approach to the martial arts (classes, seminars, basement workouts etcâ?¦.) and I have been able to teach her some rudimentary basics, however because of her age I spend more time trying to keep her focused on the task at hand than I do instructing. So she want to go a place and learn martial arts where she can wear the gi, kimono, uniform with other children her age. I have no problems doing this I am just fearful that she will be brought up in a hard style like I was and then have issues moving more towards a practical martial art (my hopes are that she take up FMA/JKD like her old man ; > ) Does anyone have any recommendations of how to pursue this? I have setup times to visit the local Kempo, Tae Kwon Do, and San Soo schools to talk about their curriculum and determine how many children are present. (Hoping that the San Soo works out as it is more close to my native Wing Chun which is part of my background.) Any suggestions are welcome. Despite our ragging on them, "hard arts" do a fine job of teaching discipline and structure to kids.
