I have been reading with interest the post of "master" and such titles. My opinion; Master is a grand person who has attained spiritual and physical harmony that I wish to attain at this persons age and years of constant training. This person is humble, calm in the face of danger, is very sure of their ability that no one is really sure what this person is capable of and the "Master" will not let you know what they are capable of. Most important the "Master" does not refer to their self, nor wish to be called Master. Next point is the title of Sifu, Guro and so forth. There are "instructors" and there are "teachers" I would like to be known as "teacher" and work toward that goal. My teacher explained the difference; an instructor shows drills and kata by rote as taught to them with no explanation as the reason for this move or that. Takes your money, grants a rank and off you go. A Teacher guides the student through all aspects of training, watching the student grow in skill and as a human. taking joy in their accomplishments, consoling them in their disappointments. The student is really a child when he/she comes to you. A teacher will grow this child into a good or bad martial adult. I hope good, but there are bad teachers with excellent skills. Just my opinion. In DBMA the mission statement is to "Walk as a Warrior for All your Days." To this end the philosophy that makes sense to me is to not focus on one preferred size and weight, but to be able to handle the full panoply of options so that one may be able to adopt and improvise with items from one's environment as well as having prepared options in place. This is not to say that I do not have a preferred size and weight for fighting in a Dog Brothers Gathering. I do-- and "the Crafty Dog model" is available at www.dogbrothers.com along with "The Top Dog" and "The Salty Dog" models as well. LOL. Yip! Crafty Dog. --__--__-- Message: 3 Date: Sat, 5 Feb 2005 09:16:00 -0800 (PST) From: garry bowlds To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Serrada in Mexico Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello All, It looks like I am going to stay in Mexico for quite a long time. I found a town called Palenque, met some wonderful people, and have been invited to stay. I have already started teaching Serrada here in Palenque, but as it is a small town, I am hoping to travel around the country giving workshops on Serrada to earn living expenses. I will be going to Guatemala for a week or two to attend one of the Spainish language schools down there which are very inexpensive (approx. $100-$150 for lessons, food and lodging!) If anyone is interested in having a workshop, please contact me at gurogarry@yahoo.com. Aside to the people who emailed me privately...To those of you with nothing positive to say, I am always up for constructive criticism, but profanity and insults are another thing. I didn't "Call somebody out", I didn't name names, I didn't point the finger at someone. I did NOT direct my comments at any particular style, I don't "hate" the Gracies, the Dog Brothers, Sayoc, Inosanto, or ANYBODY. Some of these people were my teachers, and I have the highest respect for all of them. Read my post without wearing your school uniform, and you will probably see it in a more positive light. I admit freely that I made some generalizations about different styles, of course I accept that there are exceptions to the rule! But I don't think my observations were off the mark at all, and I will happily discuss/debate these points with any interested parties...but let's keep it civil, whaddaya say? I met one a couple of years ago and married her. It was the best thing I ever did. We have been together for over 2 years without an argument or issue of any kind. I pray that you have found the same thing I did. Be blessed. Hey I am the first one to admit that I am sarcastic. Also you don't know me (unless you have signed on under a different name to disguise yourself) so why make a remark regarding my humilty unless it is to bate me or upset me - tut tut shame on you.  You used the line _"We each pick the story that makes us feel best about ourselves, sometimes both at once." Mate this is not facing reality and is only deluding yourself might I suggest that you be totally honest with yourself and cut out all the BS. You also stated - "With regards to MA in general people fight and have always fought. They've learned from what others do and have innovated. The basics remain the same. The particulars change in different times and places to suit local conditions. Sometimes they change in certain ways because of weird historical accidents." - Do the basics remain the same, I would like to think that we have come a long way from banging clubs or tree roots on each others head to a scientific art of Arnis/Escrima/Kali. Also what are the particulars that change are they the basics if so therefore have you contradicted yourself... Really lets face it there are a couple of things that come naturally to human beings,I call these the three Fs - Fighting, Fornicating and Feeding. You also advocate on making educated guesses - "Others we don't know and just make our best educated guesses." As we all know guesses are the mother of all F ups. Therefore even though you have expressed your opinion which you consider to be full of good advice I will not be taking it.
