IMHO, "Teacher" would be a > more appropriate word, and deeper in meaning than > "instructor" or "master". In fencing the French fencing master title, "Maitre d'Armes" doesn't translate into English as "Master of Arms" as many erroneously think, but rather into "Teacher of Arms." Palenque, Chiapas is a very interesting part of Mexico. Back in the late 70s a friend from the DF and I once drove the road (then dirt) from Palenque to San Cristobal de las Casas where we wound up in prison (not jail, but prison) for three days, , , , Anyway, I remember going through one village on that dirt road that had an air of death in it (kind of like in the James Woods movie "Salvador") where the Mexican Army was stationed. How active is the Zapatista revolt there now? As far as language schools go, you may also wish to consider Cuernavaca in Morelos, Mexico (just south of the mountains around the Distrito Federal) There are several language schools there. Not only is Cuernavaca a lovely town, but I have very fond memories of the one that I attended on various occasions. Also Acapulco is 4 hours to the south on a road that is pure excitement for a motorcyclist. (I had a vertical twin 750 Yamaha that was an imitation Triumph) but I digress. Mexico is a wonderful country (once you get past the border regions!) All the best on your Adventure. Woof, Crafty Dog PS: I will be doing a seminar in Mexico City on Feb 26-27 http://dogbrothers.com/article_info.php?articles_id=1 If you happen to be in the area it would be a pleasure to meet. > Hello All, > > It looks like I am going to stay in Mexico for quite a long time. I was curious. I am such and 80's child. ha ha I did always dig on his music though. But I grew up in the 70's and 80's. I kinda think life was better then. Just curious. Have a great day. I met a girl. :) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Meeting a girl would be nice, but actually, I discovered a very spiritual, vegetarian community that is part of El Panchan, in a jungle setting, near the ruins in Palenque that I fell in love with, and I was asked to stay and live there by the owners. When I mentioned my FMA background, I was asked to give an Escrima workshop. The first day, there were 4 people there. The second day, 8 people showed up. I have also received some e-mails from a few martial arts schools around Mexico that have asked me to give seminars at their schools. The area is fantasic, and I recommend anyone coming this way to check out Rakshita´s. Hasta luego! Guro Garry __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Perhaps it gets confused with Master-at-Arms. Master at Arms is simply defined as the person in charge of discipline or empowered to maintain order. Not sure how or why people came to think of it as something else. While on that topic, we also seem to primarily focus in on only one of the 26 definitions given for the term master, that one being "an owner of a slave or animal". Definitions that are in play for use as a martial arts rank or title are "a person eminently skilled in something", or "a workman qualified to teach apprentices", or "a teacher, tutor or schoolmaster", or "a person whose teachings one accepts", or "become an adept in", etc. Ray "Perhaps a guro, but not a religious leader or spiritual guide" Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 7 Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2005 17:50:50 -0800 (PST) From: david foggie Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Bot Jocano and rank To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net jay de leon wrote: Dear mang Jay, Thank you for the information.
