Not the best way to learn for some students, but it certainly makes you a big believer in their skills and in their art. :) Ray Terry rterry@idiom.com --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Peter Lewis" To: Date: Fri, 25 Feb 2005 19:34:53 -0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Reply to Oliver Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Oliver An interesting question, and indeed one which has occured many times. The system of the late Grandmaster Antonio 'Tatang' Ilustrisimo has been known by various names during the past few decades. Initially, just referred to 'eskrima' by Tatang, the art later became known as 'Olistrisimo' - a distortion of Olisi and Ilustrisimo, inferring the 'Stick art of GM Antonio Ilustrisimo.' During the 1980's, the art became known as Kali Ilustrisimo. This name was used on several video tapes including the three volume set by Mandirigma Productions which includes GM Tatang, M Tony Deigo, M Yuli Romo, M Christopher Rickets and M Rey Galang. The name Kali Ilustrisimo is also used on the four volume set of tapes by Master Christopher Rickets. Master Yuli Romo uses the term Kali, which for him is derived from the words Kamot meaning hand, and Lihok meaning motion. Therefore, the hand motion art of GM Ilustrisimo. This is because all movements of the sword or stick can be performed with empty hands. One of the original five pillars of the Ilustrisimo system, Master Yuli is acknowledged by his peers as the 2nd most senior student of Tatang. In order to distinguish Master Yuli's blend of the art, and to acknowledge other influences, the name Kali (Romo Clan) Ilustrisimo is used. Master Yuli Romo is not only one of the most senior master grade students of GM Ilustrisimo, but also the heir to the Romo family system of the late GM Islao Romo and the late GM Pedring Romo. The term Kalis came to use much later, and most likely after the passing of Tatang. This term is thought to be derived from the word Kris, with the generic meaning of sword, thus the Sword art of GM Ilustrisimo. With all this said, it is just a name and the art of GM Ilustrisimo remains highly respected as one of the most direct and functional forms of FMA. I hope that this answers your question, but please feel free to ask me for clarification if necessary. Is this the case? I thought some of Tatang's cousins or other relations used this spelling for the family name. As the most senior student, Tony Diego was appointed head of the Ilustrisimo system. IMHO, everyone has their own interpretation of what is/was taught to them because no individual is alike... Though the interpretation/s vary, the concepts of Ilustrisimo are the same. In Yuli's case for example, the strikes/footwork are from the Ilustrisimo concept but the body movement comes from his background in Balintawak/Tat Kun Tao." It's nice to see Maestro Romy's name mentioned for once as being one of the 5 pillars Doug --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
