Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I see my request has caused a lot of interest both positive and negative. I would to say Thank you to all those who have shared their views and opinions on the forum regarding my question and helped me shape my opinions. I have read every repay and have come to accept the some points and also realise that there is a lot of internal and external politics regarding the Kali(s) Ilustrisimo system. To Peter Lewis: Yes I did write to Erle Montaigue after reading his testimonial on Yuli Romo on the Yuli Romo website that Tatang named Yuli as his successor. If you have read my e-mail to him you will find that I said that on an interview on Ray Galang on the MAI magazine I quoted Ray Galang saying about Tony Diego that he was “selected and elected successor to Tatang” I wrote to Erle Montaigue to point that fact out to which I believe he wrote you to ask for it to be changed. I thought Erle Montaigue was very sincere and humble in doing that. Is that a fault on my part for pointing out the fact? I no one on this forum will dispute that. I am astounded at some of the negative comments directed at me and feel is was based on assumptions rather then fact and I felt these individuals were judging me with out understand my motives. To you I say having read all the viewpoints I now accept the following. 1) The term Kali is widely used in America to rarer to Arnis/Eskrima and is for marketing reason and not necessary reflecting an art or system. 2) Ray Galang is a respected master of the arts and Kali Ilustrisimo is used not to offend be disrespectful to the systems head. 3) Yuli Romo is also respected master or the arts that has combed the Ilustrisimo system with his own blend of Arnis/Eskrima experience, but is quite different to that of Tatang Ilustrisimo. 4) The “Five Pillars” of Ilustrisimo is recent party line (Internal politics) I wish no further discussion regarding this on this forum because I feel this is bringing down the tone of this great forum. I say to everyone on the forum that I did not what to “stir things up” or cause “mischief”. I belong to no group, association or teacher. I was interested in the FMA particularly in the Kalis Ilustrisimo system because of my fondness of bladed arts, but will no longer pursue it any further. I have seen and read enough to put me off right now. Lastly I leave you and this matter behind me with a quote made by a member on this forum: "If you would be a real seeker after truth, it is necessary that at least once in your life you doubt, as far as possible, all things." Rene Descartes. Respectfully yours Oliver --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Take Yahoo! Mail with you! All of them were already instructors in other systems and/or martial arts, some having schools. GM Tony Diego recognized heir to KI is a given. Though Master Yuli did not have the same exposure, he is the second most senior disciple noted for his greater understanding of the philosophy, concepts and even disarms of the system. He was also actively teaching in his province. Master Topher was actively teaching under the Bakbakan banner and known for his emphasis on combat application and sparring. He is recognized as the true archivist of the system, initiating the videotaping of each session in an effort to meticulously dissect Tatangs teachings. As David Foggie mentioned, Master Rey Galang organized the Masters Tour in Australia which was one of the first ever public demonstration / seminar of Tatangs art. This memorable event was milestone for KI history and there is no denying Bakbakan International's overwhelming efforts and contribution to preserving and promoting KI worldwide. In addition, he is recognized as the foremost authority of the knife tactics in KI known as Tulisan. Through Lameco, the late PG Edgar Sulite gave FMA enthusiasts in the U.S. their first glimpse of KI and continued to do so through books, seminars, videos up until his untimely death. Additionally, these gentlemen are considered some of the most senior, loyal and dedicated students of legendary Antonio Tatang Ilustrisimo. None of what has been stated here is new. It is all documented and was even published in several books and magazines released in the past decade, if not more. As they say, “you cannot turn back the hands of time”. The fact that some people are only now questioning or suggesting otherwise is a bit unsettling. Yours in the Arts, John G. You were a member of this great forum, and I must admit it is the best :), for all of about 5 mins before you posted your first email. That first email being the one that caused a bit of a firestorm. My wife is the biggest "what if" training partner that I have worked with as she is always challenging why I have her do this or that and we end up on tangents for hours (which is great as she is actively talking about defense and FMA/JKD concepts which aside from my family is my most favorite subject!) Try and let us know.
