There's a lot to be said for the difference, but let's start with the view from 30,000 feet. Someone with good MMA training is strong, tough, fast, can hit hard, can take a hit, knows range and distance, protects his vitals and can pug standing up or roll around on the floor. I'd say that puts him or her ahead of 99% of one-trick "street fighters" or your average mean guy with an attitude. There might be places you can attack him that the ring doesn't prepare him for. Mind you, your dirty little tricks will have to get targets he doesn't protect with techniques he can't counter and need to be more effective than his considerable strengths. It's not a bet I'd personally take. As for getting the bejeesus kicked out of you if you go to the ground, well, it may very well happen if there are several of them and you haven't learned how to deal with that. But I have been lucky enough to have met people who can and who can teach others to do the same. One was an Alaska State Trooper and national Judo coach who had had to make it work. Repeatedly. Against big strong guys who haul three miles of fishing line loaded with big fish for a living. He had to modify some of what he did and he got ribs kicked in from time to time, but he learned how to deal (and how to use the first guy he took down as a sponge to soak up boots and knives). The guy was obviously very good, but he wasn't superman. Another gentleman - NYPD's most decorated police officer, nearly sole survivor of the defunct Street Violent Crimes Unit, Marine with a Vietnam service record consisting of two dates and a rank, etc. etc. etc. - has developed a whole groundfighting (not just ground grappling) system that assumes there will be more than one armed bad guy. His stuff has an excellent track record among police and federal law enforcement and his many regular students. I'm not as sure about the "he wasn't superman" part - the gentleman is one of those guys who is about 20% larger than life in every way. His students mostly seem to put their pants on one leg at a time :-) --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 14:39:59 -0800 (Pacific Standard Time) From: "Todd Ellner" To: Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Socratic Methods Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In a recent post Marc alluded to a JKD/KM guy who had good training but was a ring fighter. This seems a little strange. I know that Krav Maga has gone through some commercialization lately. It's still definitely not a sport system. What I've seen has been solid military combatives along the lines of "hit him, throw him to the ground, stomp a mudhole in him". Maybe the particular student has spent more time in a JKD school that stresses MMA competition. Many teachers have jumped on that bandwagon. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Sidney525@aol.com Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 18:13:12 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net CC: jjryan77@yahoo.com Subject: [Eskrima] Pak Vic Seminar- March 19 & 20, Chicago Area Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Pak Vic will be holding a seminar March 19 & 20 in Morris, IL Cost: $120.00 For more information, e-mail jjryan77@yahoo.com Sid --__--__-- Message: 8 Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 19:02:39 -0500 From: Andrew Astle To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Pak Vic Seminar- March 19 & 20, Chicago Area Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Sidney525@aol.com wrote: >Pak Vic will be holding a seminar March 19 & 20 in Morris, IL >Cost: $120.00 > >For more information, e-mail jjryan77@yahoo.com > >Sid >_______________________________________________ >Eskrima mailing list, 2100 members >Eskrima@martialartsresource.net >Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource >Standard disclaimers apply >http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima > > > > Thanks for the info Sidney. I have hosted Maha Guru Pak Victor de Thouars for seminars in Cortland New York in the past couple of years, and I highly recommend him! Pak Vic is an excellent instructor and has studied the art of Serak for nearly 55 years and is conversant with many contemporary systems due to his long time and continuing association with Ustad Guru Dan Inosanto.
