First, I'm a very firm believer that drawing and using a knife in a defensive situation is something that requires a lot of practice if you've any hope of pulling it off when things get grim. The simplest way to practice constantly is to use your utility blade whenever you can and retask it if the need arises. One solution I've used in the past is to buy utility blades in pairs, one I beat around with and the other reserved for just in case carry. This point strikes me as a variation of a debate that arises in concealed carry circles. There are a lot of folks who advocate carrying the same gun in the same holster in the same position every time, the argument being that this sort of consistency pays off when pieces of seconds count. The other side of the aisle, on which I stand, feels carry habits are best adapted to specific needs. How one carries in shorts and a "muscle T" isn't the same as how one carries in a mid-December blizzard. The question ultimately becomes: do you adapt life to your carry habits or carry habits to your life? I'm in the latter camp and hence sometimes find myself doing things with a weapon that a purist would tut-tut. I live in Austin TX, and have a Kel-Tec P32 (small as a Palm Pilot, but shoots a .32 cal) and a Kimber Ultra Carry (a .45 cal that is smaller than a full size 1911, but far larger than the P32). Kel-Tec also makes a P3AT; virtually the same size but shoots a .380. Great carry pistols: http://www.kel-tec.com/ Inexpensive, reliable, and safe (long trigger pulls). However, they're not legal in all states (CA, and those that require a fired cartridge). But I've also heard stories about knife fights that were won or lost simply because of the sharpness of the blade. I would like to think that I will sharpen my knife when I use it, but I've lived with myself long enough to know better. :-P WoodyTX On Mon, 21 Mar 2005 12:14:30 -0500, Buz Grover wrote: > Woody writes: > > > One instructor put it this way: "Can I borrow your gun?
